Is my cage too small???

Hi, I'm a newbie in the reptile world and I've gotten a snow corn snake that's about 4ft, maybe a little, little over. I've done plenty of research, but I just want to make sure---is a 55 gallon tank big enough? I dont really have the money to upgrade. I got him Sunday, and he hasn't moved too much...he was active, extremely, in the bag...is he just adjusting? Temp is normal, cold end is 76, hot end is 82. Here's my set up:

Snake Crazy

I don't have a snake yet but that is more than big enough. The smallest a tank should be is 20 gallons. Looks nice.^^

Your set-up looks great, just one thing if that is the water dish in the front left? It is a bit small many corn snakes like to get in and soak in their water dish. good luck

Thanks, I thought about that too, so I went ahead and took two rocks out and put a larger dish in...damages the overall look of the tank, but I'm sure he'll be happier. It's over my undertank heater...is that going to be a problem?

Put it in the middle. You may end up with corn snake stew if you put it over th heating area. He may not drink or soak in there.

:-offtopic don't be sorry, you can be funny, I just meant a snake stew UGH, but it did sound funny and that is OK. Humor goes a long way on this site.

If the corn is contantly soaking then there is something wrong with its environment. Personally i think the water bowl is penty big. I give my snakes no options to soak as they have perfect sheds. Soaking is not necessary except during these periods. I find a light misting as they clear from the blue gives them perfect conditions to have a good shed.

I don't see it as necessary to have a large space stealing waterbowl that can increase himidity to undesired levels.

:-offtopic Elle I did not say constantly, and many snakes just like to get in briefly and soak. Also that is why I check humidity levels, I also mist and get good sheds. Frankly my snake that large may drain that bowl after eating. As with all things on this site everyone has their own opinion but most agree with an adequate water supply.

Great! Just what I wanted to hear! Is his low activity level due to environment change?

Give him a while to settle in. Corns tend to hide a lot during the day anyways, and usually only go a' wandering at dusk or dawn.

Your viv is just fine. The waterbowl thing is all up to personal preference.

I don't think this is necisaraly true. Some corns like to soak themselves, some don't it all maters on the snake.

If you have to mist to insure good sheds there is something wrong with your snakes envroment. Having a large waterbowl or a humid hide is no different than misting and it gives the snake the option of using it when the snake feels the need to.

The biggest problem from waterbowls on humidity is when it is put directly above or below the heat source. And unless you are stupid you will not have that problem.

True

Sorry in all this hub-bub did we miss a question? Corn snakes are not very active, at least when we are looking. Although as with everything some may seem on the move all the time and some you hardly see. Mine seem to be most active in the evening after sundwon, however two seem to roam a lot. These are just mine however.

You would think hatchlings are more active becasue they are "babies" and an older snake would be lazy. Also since hatchlings are smaller they have so many places to discover in their tank.
