Is my viv ok???

Im using my friends digital camera and i have got some pics of my snake and viv and stuff.

Heres the viv...

Is it ok???

That bulb needs to be covered with a grill or something, you'd be surprised how easily a snake can reach it and burn himself.

Other than the aforementioned exposed heat lamp, it looks fine to me. Have fun with it!

FWIW, remember that the more "stuff" in the enclosure, the more stuff that has to be sanitized.

Climbing branches?

i don't know about everybody else, but my little guy loves to climb. After I saw him clinging to his thermometer, I bought him some climbing vines, and he's very happy now. Almost every night (unless he's about to shed or has just eaten) he's out having a climb. He wasn't nearly this active before the vines were introduced.

Looks like you've got some branches in there that could be climbed on... they are just awfully low. I'd probably prop them up against the sides or something so your little guy can get some height.

I think your terrarium looks great. If I were a snake, I'm sure I'd be happy in it.

the Mayor in action...

Here's Mayor Wilkins on his new vines. He's much happier now. (it looks like he's eating the light chord to his light, but it's on the outside of the glass, I promise!)

My snakes love to burrow/ dig around as well as climb, so the only other thing that might be good is a nice 'dig-able' substrate, but that also leads to other considerations (ease of cleaning, pers. pref., looks, etc.)

Great viv!! Would it not make more sense to put the warm end thermometer lower down the wall? The snake is gonna be on the ground so you'll wanna know the temp down there and not directly under the lamp.

My viv

Hey all

I bought the viv off a friends who keeped his Bearded Lizard in it, so the thermomiters were up near the top of the viv when I bought it.

I wil try and move them down, how high off the ground shall they be????????

This morning I found out that my snake had shed
and this was the first time since I have had him, so I was really happy.

Your thermometer should be as close as possible to the surface of the substrate. A device that is not on the surface is only going to give you the temperature of the ambient air, something that is not very useful to a keeper.

Cav is absolutely right. I bought those stick on ZOO Med thermometers and put one at both the hot and the cold ends, pretty low down, however they were on the tank walls and not onthe substrate. It worked great for the cold end since the substrate is basically the same as the ambient air, however I also bought a digital thermometer with a probe at the end and laid it on the surface of the hot substrate (all before i got the snakes home). I was shocked to see that the wall thermometer showed a good 10 F cooler than the probe was indicating, fortunately i had a rheostat so i could regulate the heat pad and bring it down. All has been well since.
