Is regular plywood alright?

bekers71

What addiction?!
We are thinking about trying our hand at making a rack for some of the little guys. I have a bunch of 1/2" plywood and was wondering if it is alright to use for a snake rack? I know pine bedding is a big no-no. But what about as shelves for a rack unit?

Thanks in advance!

Should be ok. I'd seal it with a water based sealant or at least line the "tops" of the bus with vinyl to protect it from humidity.

My Cheerio has a plywood viv, but it is sealed/painted.
If you're going to use it to hold tubs I don't think it would even be an issue.

i have made a few cages with plywood. don't have me but I have never sealed them. After i got a rack system, and learned a little more about snakes I worry now that the resins, and glues that hold that pine plywood together might have an ill effect, and it might not. If you can afford to seal it (even if ur using tubs) I would reccomend you do seal the rack. If you don't and never have any ill effects that wonderful too! I didn't have any when I used my plywood cages to HOUSE my snakes, its just lately I am a worrier.

As much as you are worried about carcinogens, you would worry about the dust. Some shavings could potentially kill your snakes, that being said "know" what is in your plywood (often more so chips of spare wood than any particular wood), and the glues are of concern ;)

You can ask the guys as Home Depot, or Lowes etc, someone will know for sure (better than most petshops knows their products heh)

I echo what has been said.....seal the plywood where it would come in contact with the snake....i.e if you make it lidless you'd want to seal it where the plywood acts as a lid. Besides sealing it for protection to your snake which I don't think is all that big of a deal....you probably want to seal it so moisture from the cage doesn't leach into the wood and cause mold problems or warping.
