It's Just a Dog

It's Just a Dog

From time to time people tell me, "Lighten up, it's just a dog," or, "That's a lot of money for just a dog." They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent or the costs involved for "just a dog."

Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog."

Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog," but I did not once feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog," and, in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it's "just a dog," then you will probably understand phases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise."

"Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy.

"Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person.

Because of "just a dog" I will rise early, take long walks and look longingly to the future.

So for me, and folks like me, it's not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past and the pure joy of the moment.

"Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog" but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being "just a human."

So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog." just smile...because they "just don't understand."

You can change it to "Just a snake" but not every part fits lol

That is beautiful. I came into this thread ready to rage and got a very nice surprise. My maternal grandmother has the "just a dog" attitude. When my uncle finally decided to rehome his pit/border collie mix, she told me that if I got rid of my current dog, that I would be allowed to have Alex. I was appalled beyond belief. Sure, Kumo's a walking health problem, and the most stubborn creature on 4 legs... but I love him.

Thanks, Sharon.
Brutus is about six feet away. Dozing, but alert for the sign to come surf the interwebz from my lap. He has no idea he's borderline too big, and I just can't seem to bring myself to tell him.

NOTE : recently in another thread, in an attempt to be funny I was clumsily insensitive about other species of pets. This thread and your post, Sharon, make me realize that sometimes empathy is better than humor. ;)

I got that a lot from some of my relatives when my kitty Reily (who was only about a year old at the time) broke his hip and had to have very expensive surgery to fix it. My cats aren't "just cats." They're friends, and family. Our lives would be much less rich and interesting without them. Worth every penny.

I agree with all of you. Luckily my family has never had that attitude. My bf does a little bit but I am working hard to set him straight lol. Now we just need to get people to understand our love of snakes...

Well, dont work at fixing him.. Just get a new one.. Like me... ;)

Anyway, I agree completely. I don't know what I'd do with my dogs. They always know when I need them. Lol.

True

What wasnt mentioned is that, how loyal they are and when showed love, love to show it back to you.
They will go above and beyond any human companion, just to see that you are happy!
They will obey comands not out of fear, but out of love for you!
If a time came, when they needed to save you they are there,I know, one saved me before!
