Ok guys I have my 'little dani' in a 10gallon glass tank for snakes. I was wondering since my exotic pet store can make a safe, no escape proof top for it, I wanted to get some feed back on what you guys think. Should I use it, get rid of it, Its a 30 gal. glass fish tank, but empty now & it came w/ a stand which we are using right now to show him off on. All I would have to do is get a top for it. The measurements are 21inH x 18inW 20inL (hope that is right, I know I'm right on the Height part..lol) I would put things he could climb on. (he loves the vines I have in there now) Not really sure if its necessary but since I have the tank & plan on never getting fish again (only corns :)) I really would like to see him when he is bigger roam around, since he is now in our living room...YAY!!

Need advice & opinions from the pros here.

TIA,

Vikki

Well it will certainly be a good size for his forever home.
However, at only 11 weeks old just getting used to his ten gallon might be hard enough.
I'd wait till your snake got a little bit older. Sometimes people find that the younger snakes can't handle all the room.

But if you do do it you need to make sure you have tons of hiding spaces so that your snake won't feel open and exposed in the large area.

20x18inches isn't big enough for an adult corn IMO. It's a 30 gallon due to the height, but floor space is much more important. I'd go for something above 30" long, personally. My corn is in a vivarium 36"L x 15"W.

I would agree with Plissken. Corn snakes, mine included, will climb when they are young. However, floor space is much more important when they get older and larger.

I'm getting ready to move Roxanne from a 29 gallon Critter Cage (30L X 12W X 18H) to a 30 gallon breeder (36L X 12W X 16H) just for that reason...well, that and the 30 gallon breeder with stand was free :grin01:

Steve

thanks for all the responses!

Oh well it was a thought & I spent some change on it so I was hopin' to be able to reuse it. It did make a beautiful fish tank, but I love my corn..no more fish for me. hehe I guess I can give it away, it has a nice stand. But he is on it right now.
So what age should he be upgraded? He is almost 3mths old. I have 2 hides, a nice size water bowl, vines (which he loves to climb) & I put a scenery on the back & sides so he feels very cozy & safe. I can't even find him..lol

Thanks guys! V~

You could perhaps lay it on it's side and make the lid one that slides up. I did that with some of my tanks when they all wouldn't fit on the shelves I had. It will give your snake more floor space that way and you can still use the tank.

What a brilliant idea..:) they could make me a sliding door that locks...hmmm will have to look more at it tomorrow..sounds grt. will update. BTW when should he graduate out of his 10 gallon tank? He's just under 3mths.

There's no set time when corns should be upgraded. Do it when you want to. A small snake will be fine in a large tank so long as you provide a ton of cover. My corn went straight in to a 30" long when he was tiny and it worked great.

Agreed. More important than size is coverage. The problem with large tanks and small snakes is their inclination to feel threatened. So long as you provide plenty of ground coverage, and loads of hides, your snake shouldn't feel too stressed. As he matures and grows larger, you can remove some of the ground coverage and add decorations to replace it.

My yearling corn went into a 20long at around 5 months of age...and loved the transition...

I think it depends upon the snake too. I have a few hatchlings that are very shy and would not do well in a large area. Others are very laid back and you could probably put them in a huge tank with two hides and they'd do great.

Thanks guys!

Meg I tried it today & what a bright idea! It would look grt & he would have more ground coverage (a little over 3inches) than the height wise. So I will hang on to the tank. See about having a side door installed, but that's down the road. I was just curious as to either hang on to it or give it away.
BTW he is shy, The mth we have had him we have never seen him (unless we take him out)....its a shame he is so pretty. :shrugs:
