I've got pinkies!

Bobo's Mama

proud corn mommy!
I just wanted to share my first time breeding success with everyone. I picked up 1:2 mice, a nice variety, no PIW. I hate those things, they remind me of lab experiments and stuff. The male is Dove, and the two females, one is black and the other is brown Agouti. I got them around the middle of last month. I think on the 17th. I put them together and there were no fights or anything like that. They are in a rather large cage, for mice anyway, and its got lots of stuff to do and things to chew on. They are pets too I guess. I didn't really name them, but I still wanted them to be comfy so they've got a big igloo which is where the nest is, a chube tube which is just a bigger version of a toilet paper roll, a wheel and lots of wooden chewies. Anyway, I knew the Agouti was about to pop any day and tonight she did! I think she is just about done having the litter. She is very freindly and I was even able to see her give birth to one of them. The black female is also looking very plump as well. She is so vocal, alway squeaking at me or the other mice. Just wanted to share with everyone. I guess I've had better luck than poor old Mike (mdorfer), he's been trying forever. Hey buddy, I send my luck your way!

Congrats

Congratualions on your new success! It sounds like you've already become quite attached to your new little critters. I'm thinking about about setting up a little colony myself. Only thing is, I don't like killing anything, even when it comes to a bug in the house. I'm a catch and release kinda guy.

I'll need to do more research on Co2 chambers before I make up my mind about the mice.

Mom left the nest to get a bite to eat and I took a peak and there are 9 babies. I'm pretty sure its her first litter so I guess its okay that its a little on the small side. They all look nice and healthy though, so I'm :D

Congrats!!

I've been trying all summer to set up a productive colony. I've tried 1.2, 1.3 & 1.4. They don't fight, the females just never get pregnant. I've tried 3 different males with their own females and have waited about about 3 months with each one. I finally decided it just wasn't meant to be (maybe my room is too warm?) I brought them all back to the pet store (they were too cute to be food) except one group with my son's "pet" as the male and, finally, I 'think' one is pregnant. I'm hoping that I'll have a birth announcement soon. Send some of the good vibes my way!

I think its actually kind of weird that I would have such good luck and yet I've only got two snakes to feed. Pretty soon I am going to be overrun with pinkies and fuzzies, and yet you guys who have many, many more snakes than I do can't get your colonies going. Weird how things work out. I've also got 1:2 rats that are pets, but also breeding. They actually have names, Salt & Pepper are the girls and Stud is the boy. Nice variety there too. Stud is Himalayan and Salt is Hairless Black-eyed White, and Pepper is black. The hairless one is most definately pregnant, with hairless rats its easy to tell because there is no fur to hide anything. Her belly sways from side to side. Her babies I will probably feed off, but Pepper's I may raise and sell back to the petstores for a couple of bags of food or bedding.

I think in this case. Are your mice on a 12:12 cycle, as in do they get 12 hours of light and 12 hours or night. If not then i sugesst geting a little timer you can plug a light into and set if for a 12:12 cycle. I'vce noticed In mice (as well in most rodents) thye breed well in Lower temp rooms, preferably 20- 21 degrees. even thats pushing it abit. Also what kinda of set up do you have? Just wondering. Because sometimes it also contributes to non-producing females.

Wow, thanks! It's nice to know people care

I thought "Dove" and "Agouti" were their names!

I tried to get a colony going myself with NO luck. Swapped out males, swapped out females, bought from different sources. In 7 plus months nary a litter. Maybe I'll try again at some point. F/T is working just too fine right now.

Does anyone know why this happens? I figured that mice bred like rabbits. But I couldn't get any (re)production out of mine.

I had one male mouse, a silky I believe, that was so charming. He was very tame and friendly. And, he TALKED. I had never heard a mouse talk before. He had quite the vocabulary of snuffs, huffs, clicks, and squeaks. I thought it was the most extraordinary and appealing behavior. I called him "Hubby". He never fathered an offspring but I was too fond of him to cull him. It was a sad day in our house when he died. He is resting in the backyard now.

Well coyote. There are many questions to be asked. Main reasons for not breeding are many. Their 12:12 cycle is being disrupted. Your temperatures may be to high. Many questions. Just the next time you try to breed mice, make sure the temps are low, they are on a 12:12 cycle, you don't handle them to often. Plus, I must advise you all who do wish to breed mice and have no success. Air quality and Loud noises will effect them more then you think. In some cases sometimes the 12:12 cycles just down work. Sometimes extending the hours of light to say 14 hours and improve reprductive success.

Hope some of this helps. I my self am still working with many other ways of breeding mice. Hopefully someday I can produce a book or something on the net to help hopeful Mice breeders. If you need any more help

I've got 8 more pinkies! My other mouse gave birth this morning. Her litter was small as well. :shrugs: Oh well, I guess first litters are smaller. Its almost hard to tell the difference between the newborns and the ones that were born Saturday, except that the older ones are darker looking. Hah! No PIW, its looks like it anyway. They would stay pink looking until they got their hair, but all the older pinkies have dark skin and dark eyes. Well, I've still got a few days before I have to do anything with them because I want them to be at least peach fuzzies before I cull them.

My hairless rat just had 13 babies today! The sound of squeaking is coming from the bathroom/mouse/ratroom. So I now have 30 babies for 2 snakes. I think I'm set for a few months. Its amazing that everyone decide to have babies within a week of each other. 9 on Saturday, 8 on Tuesday, and 13 today. I think I will see if Skizzard's breeder would be interested in some of them.

Congrats!

congrats on all the babies. One of my mice had 4 pinks a couple of days ago. She was a first time breeder too. Your lucky to have 9, 8, and 13.
Do you think the hairless rats (females) breed better than the regular rats? Do they give more babies? If they do then I might buy a Hairless female.
Well good luck with the reproduction. LOL. Your snakes will be happy.

Congrats!!!!
One of mine is definately ready to deliver any day. This will be my first litter in over 4 months of trying. So you did send some of that luck my way. Thanks!!

I haven't had my rats long enough to know whether the hairless ones are better breeders. They seem about the same. The hairless rat has had two litters so far, the first had 14 babies, but two died, so 12 viable. And this litter has 13, all viable. The one I have that has hair, had one litter so far, it had 12 babies. So, so far they seem about the same, give or take a few.

Good news for me! One of my rats had 7 babies, so far. I walked out to check on them and she was taking a break right outside her nest. I counted 7. Her sister will have some anyday now so I'm really excited. Good luck to all who have some yet to come!

Wow. my babies have gotten to Hoppers now, and their just going. They seems to be fine to me.

Hairless rats are notorious for not being able to lactate enough for their young ones. Other then that, they will produce the same amount of young as furred rats. As with any animal, there is individual variation, as genetics plays a role in as well.

Thanks Ratsncorns for your answer...

I was just wondering if they were better breeders but I guess not so I'll just stick with the ones I got.

Well I checked on them a little while ago and there was 13 babies so she had more. I'm so happy. Well agian good luck to all.
