James is acting wierd...

I feed my corn every thursday 1 adult mouse and he stays active and poops on Monday nights. Its been like this for about 3 months like clock work.

HOwever, I fed him last thursday and he has stayed on his heat pad since then, not moving at all, and still has not pooped yet (wednesday).

I usually handle him everyday except friday and saturdays, but today I just took him out and he struck at me... its the first time he's ever done that in the 3 months ive had him. He's acting so different since his last feeding. Whats goin on with James!?

Who knows? Could be he's preparing to shed and now he's just changing a bit. As they grow they don't necessarily poop as often. I've found that the adults poop once a week usually near the time when they are due to be fed again. Babies can go several times in the week. Maybe he's just having a bad snake day. I've had a couple change personalities over time. One got nicer and one more aggressive.

That's the big clue that one of my guys is going to shed- they don't come back out after eating when I would expect them to, and don't move much if at all. They _will_ move into a moist hide if I put one in. The whole process usually takes about 10 days. Has he shed for you yet?

Impending shed is my guess as well. Many snakes get nervous when they are getting ready to shed, which is probably why he struck at you. Keep an eye on him for a few days and see if he sheds for you.

he shed about 2 months ago and I havent seen his eyes get cloudy blue at all either.... so i dont know. last time he shed they were blue for a few days.

my main concern is that tomorrow is feeding day again and since he hasnt pooped yet, i dont know if i should feed him another mouse or if i should wait..... what do you think?

You can sometimes miss the blue stage although in anerys it's a little harder. That's not to say that you can. A 10 yr. old snake though probably won't shed more than 3-4 times a year unless they get an injury. Could just be the time of year. I'd hold off on food unless you think you might have missed the poop somehow. If they are as large as my adult's poops though, that's unlikely. It won't hurt him to go longer without food at his age. He is an older snake so you might want to keep an eye out and make sure there's no other signs of illness.

well I guess I will wait to feed him until I see a poop. I know that I wouldn't miss it because it has a pretty rancid smell and is very large. I guess its possible that he will shed; but im not sure, he's just acting so different. How long can he go without eating?

A long time. Several months (or more!), if he's well-fed and healthy. Unless he appears to be losing a lot of weight, nothing's wrong with him going off feed, besides a little extra stress on you. ;)

My male goes off food every year at breeding time and has gone 3 months or more without food and hasn't suffered a bit.

I have a two year old king who has only eaten twice since July. They can go a looong time. I wouldn't worry unless you see him start to lose weight.

Have you had him checked by a vet?

no i have not taken him to a vet yet.... nothing really seems wrong with him besides that he is less active and hasn't pooped. I live in Wisconsin so its getting colder here now.... but I dont know how that would affect him because his cage temerature is still the same. Is it normal for snakes to go awhile without pooping? I'm just worried he's having digestion problems or something.

Sometimes. If he seems that he might be a bit impacted you can try soaking him in tepid water. A bath can very often trigger defecation.

wow everything is fine again.... I bathed him in luke warm water and lightly massaged the end of his body and he pooped almost immediatley! and wow - it was quite the poop, being 8 days later from his feeding. I am going to feed him later tonight so he still can stay on a schedule. In the future am I going to have to bath and massage him to poop? is he just that old now?

You shouldn't have to, but if you need to you know what to do! Maybe he needs a little prune juice with his mice :)
