Just a few questions : )

Hello, I really spent a lot of time today cleaning out Damien's Viv, and I was just wondering if I did a few things right, I have owned Damien a while now and will own him all of his life, so there are still questions that I need answering : )

Anyways, step by step of what i did,
1) got a brand new spray gun bottle,
2) filled it with red hod kettle water, sprayed a few times to clean the new pipe in the bottle,
3) added cold water and created (warn water)
4) removed everything from the Viv,
5) sprayed the whole inside of the Viv,
6) used loo roll to wipe it down,
7) added the UTH, I use my heater on the inside with a thermostat because it does not get hot enough under the tank,
8) added new (beach chippings)
9) cleaned glass with warm water and loo roll,
10) added everything i removed, Including Damien himself!
11) FINISHED!

Just wondering if i did all that right? Generally I just change his bedding and remove all waste..

his hides and waterbowl were all clean so i left them,

The Viv looks loverly and clean now : )

I think thats the question for now, Ill get back to you if i have anymore!

It's a good idea to wash all the bits and pieces, (hides, bowls, fake plants etc) even if they 'look' clean. Bacteria isn't generally visible. It may not need it all the time, but I think it's a good habit to get into.

I don't see where you used any cleaning agent other than water. Water isn't anitbacterial (quite the opposite, in fact). :shrugs:

That's kind of what I was thinking, Dean. What UK cleaning product is safe for snakes? Well, a MILD bleach solution will kill anything, George. Like one part bleach to ten parts water- wipe with that, wipe again with plain water, don't spill the bleach on anything like your clothes or the floor.

I believe George is using a wooden vivarium, which I don't think you can use bleach on.

There are things which can be used though. George - log on to livefoods.co.uk and have a look at the disinfectants there. Some of them appear to be safe for wooden vivariums.


BTW - it's best if like the viv you do properly disinfect the hides and bits and pieces instead of just rinsing. If you don't want to use bleach, try boiling them. In my opinion leaving the things in boiling water works quite acceptably, and believe it or not many of the silk/plastic plants and things stand up to it quite well.

Umm, I'm not sure, I wanted to avoid going into cleaning products as the only one i could find was things like bleach or disinfected but for toilets or back yards, Is there anything else I could use? I guess tomorrow I could ring Mandy (shop keeper that i got Damien from) but hes a while away from my house even in the car so i wont be able to get there until my mum goes in 2 weeks :/

I know some herpers on a UK forum recommend using the sterilising fluid that's used for baby bottles, personally I use a spray from Wilkinsons that's safe for reptiles and small animals

yea, My new one is wooden, umm, Ill check the site out, but I think my mum will probably only buy from the local shop, since she doesn't like buying online other then england (takes a while to arrive and sometimes never does)

Ummm, We have a Wilkinson's witch i can get too in 2 weeks, any ideas of the product name, and do you use that on its own, or add water or.. what?

P.S, How long should it be before i next clean him out, if i get the bleach should i remove the new bedding, bleach then re-add it all in again? or just wait another month then do the normal clean..?

I'm due to get some more tomorrow, so I'll tell you the name when I've got it! (I just look for the yellow spray bottle ) It's in a spray bottle so no need to dilute it.The only thing I don't like about it is that it's got a lemon scent, but it wears off quickly

Thanks mate, ummm, Any idea how long it takes to wear off, Ive noticed that once the hoover bag smelled a little lemony, and Damien was out looking through his Viv doors, So i donno if that would get him abit, umm, Ya'know, he also hates the smell of soap, I'm guess some smells are just to strong, lemon and soap seem to be strong for even me, (i must sound SO perfetic lol, but he needs to be happy )

To be honest I tend to rinse the tubs after using it, so I don't know how long. I wonder what people on here think abouy the bottle-sterilising solution, because if it's ok on a baby's dishes, spoons and bottles then it may be safe for a snake?

The spray I get is already diluted, and it is labelled as safe for reptiles and small animals. From what I've read, the baby bottle solution is diluted according to the instructions on the bottle, and I've never used it personally so I wouldn't be sure about it

Okay kool, so do you think if I use the same stuff as you use the lemon stuff, it will cause damien too much stress or do you think once the smell wears off he will be fine, also, do you spray and wipe off? I'm new to the whole bleach thing so i need to ask alot of questions lol

Iv never used the spray mentioned but if its got a lemon scent it would probably be best to rinse the tank under a tap (if its small enough). If its a big viv then just wipe it all down with a wet cloth. You could always handle your snake for a while once your done to let the scent wear off a little. Maybe Wilko's sell a non scented spray.
