just got a corn snake have questions

someone gave me a corn snake, i am not sure what to feed it, it is really small snake about the length of 1.5 pencils and skinny, they told me they put a pinky mouse in and it did not eat it, actually the mouse was dead in the cage when they gave it to me, they told me they have not fed it in 4 months but that can't be. i filled up its water dish and made sure the heater thing is plugged in, but as far as food what to i do? i put a cricket in the cage... help [email protected]
 
Get the cricket out..... Corns don't eat them, and it can bite the snake....
A mouse pinky is the right thing to feed your snake... You may have to scent it first if your snake is reluctant to eat, as they normally eat anoles. Some people use chicken broth and some use tuna water on the pink..... You can also try a live pinky, or an anole if you can get one.....Although anole scenting of the pinky would be better....

You must check the temperatures on your 'heater thing' are reading ok inside the viv - if they aren't, the snake won't eat anyway.

Cool side should be around mid-high 70s, warm side should be around mid-high 80s.

What substrate are you using? Have you supplied the snake with hides (very important)? Ideally it should be left alone to settle in but if it really hasn't eaten in 4 months it needs to eat again as soon as possible.

yes, it should be eating pinkie mice right now. you can normally find them at any pet store.

the move was very stressful for your snake. and if it hasn't eaten in four months, it made need prompting to eat. some people will sent their mice with tuna juice, and some people use some other stuff. some people even use ivory soap to wash the pinkie, and it seems to make the snake want to eat it more. another thing you might try is "braining". you take a knife, and slit the head of the pinkie, and squeeze out some of the brains. the scent from this may entice your snake to eat it. if push comes to shove, you could try feeding it live food.

you should probably clean out the cage. also, when you feed your snake, dont feed it in its cage. take it out, and put it in a shoe box (with a lid. make sure u put air holes in the lid.) and feed it in the shoe box. this keeps them from aciddentily eating substrate that sticks to the pinkie, and keeps them from thinking anything small and pink (like pinkies. or fingers.) that enters the cage is food.

its possible. some snakes can go up to two years without food. however, not as babies. and its never healthy. I'm sure he's hungry. try and feed him as soon as possible.

what is the temperature on the ground in your cage? there should be a warm side, and a cold side. the warm side should be in the mid to upper 80s, and the cool side should be in the mid to upper 70s. If you dont have a thermometer, you can buy temperature probes at wal mart, and other stores like wal mart, fairly cheaply.

for food, do as listed above. he is not going to eat the cricket, so you should probably take it out.

The one thing i tried was running hot water ( as hot as the sink would go)over the pinky, then put the pinky in a little deli container then put the snake in. dont know if its the best thing to do but it worked for me.
 
I would recomend getting a small rubbermaid thing and then when you feed them, fill it with very hot water, put the frozen mouse in the water for about 15 minutes, and then take it out to feed. Some people put their snakes in different containers to feed, but I don't.
Is there a thermostat on the heat pad? If not, it could get over in the 90's, which is much to hot.
Get a thermomiter to go into the cage to see how hot it is and keep it in there the whole time. Don't use the fish tank kind that sticks to the cage. they aren't acurate. I use one that has a probe that goes inside on a wire. Works great. I will PM you pics of my setup.

as far as the cricket goes i can't get the damn cricket out its annoying, i need to clean out the cage, too, so i need to know what kind of matterial to use in the cage.

Looks like a ghost - nice looking baby :)

Babies will eat pretty often - you can feed him a pinkie ever 4-6 days for now.

The bedding you have is Aspen shavings and is a great bedding to use - you can buy it at walmart in big bags for about 4-5$

Looks like a ghost to me too, but I've been wrong before. You came to the right place to ask questions though, lots of good and knowledgeable people here. Oh yeah, welcome to the forums.
 
when can i pick it up, and how do i pick it up? it keeps hiding under its water dish.. anyone know a snake call or something, i don't want to pick up its water dish and freak out and leap outta that cage
 
A snake call? No.

Do not handle until a couple of days after feeding, you don't want a reguarge. Approach slowly and pick the snake up gently - but not so gently it darts straight out of your hands. It's common sense really. Imagine how you'd want a giant to behave if he were trying to pick you up.
