Just got my first corn snake! Super excited! He's a blizzard who hatched last summer. Anyways, I've read all about how to keep them online, but if you have any tips, feel free to let me know! My biggest questions is what substrate is the best? Right now i'm using the substrate that came with the cage. Besides that, he has an under tank heater, 2 hides, and a water bowl. Also, he's only in a 10 gallon, which is plenty big for him now, but how will i know when he outgrows it? Thanks!

Cute guy you got there. Welcome to the board. Biggest hints, let him settle in for a week before feeding or handling. Don't live feed. Don't cohab with another snake, even a corn snake (pet stores will tell you its alright to do this, it isn't.) Make sure you close the lid and that it is held down tightly. Snakes are stronger than you might believe and they get out.

Aspen is a good, cheap substrate. DO NOT use pine, cedar, or "mixed" wood chips. There is a wood substrate, I think it is called sani chip, or something like that, that is very good.

As far as outgrowing the tank, I've used 10 gallon tanks for my babies, but I usually upgrade when they're about a year old or if they just start looking too big for their little tank.

Just be sure you're using a thermostat with the UTH; those things will fry your snake otherwise. I'm guessing you don't have a humidity problem in Louisiana; I like cyprus mulch because it holds humidity better in the tank, but then again, I live in the desert. Most people here probably use aspen; my local guy thinks aspen is more likely to cause respiratory problems because it's very dry and "dusty." I used if for a while with no problems, but I like the cyprus better. Plus it's dark, so your snake will stand out nicely against it.
