need some opinions on indoor housing of a chick. I am freezing 9/10 of them and keeping 1 as a pet. They are so soft and fluffy. What do you keep an adult in? Are these baby chickens?

McNuggets the hard way....

You're looking to house a chicken.......indoors........on purpose? :eek1:

Are these baby chickens?

They certainly aren't puppies! :nope:

Uhhhhh, baby chickens grow up. That said, a heatlamp and LOTS of attention/affection. Baby chicks are cute, but holy lord, you can't leave them alone!

LOL CAV!

Regurgitation or seed? How young is this thing, exactly? Is it eating on it's own??

Edit: Never mind (you posted as I was replying). I'm thinking you should not own a chicken as a pet if you don't even know how to feed them... No offense.

Thanks Easter bunny! Bock, bock!

This is like an Easter colored nightmare! :blowhead:

Or even what they are.

So, you dont know how to care for a chick, yet you got 10 and have only killed 2 so far?

Gee, this is right in line with your corn snake x house snake hybrid post from before.

No offense, but I've read a lot of your posts and perhaps you should wait a few years before you start really getting into this hobby.

Yes they eat on there own. I will go to the feed store tomarrow after school and get info on caging and feeding for Lola(I named her). I just don't know what size cage she will need. I am going to keep her in the garage in a wood and chicken wire cage with heat lamps. Will 4' by 4' be big enough for a single one?

Ok, first off, if you are going to keep one, don't, keep two. Unlike snakes birds are very social and will be lonely and more susceptible to diseases and stress, especially if it's a baby, if it's kept alone. They are naturally raised in a flock of adult birds with their mother constantly feeding and fussing over them, and about a dozen siblings to play with.

Also, unless you want a bunch of noisy roosters, check their feet. Pick the two healthiest with the smallest feet. It won't guarantee that you keep hens, but baby roosters tend to have larger feet than baby hens.

Where do you live? Are you in a city? Some cities have laws against keeping chickens in the city limits. You will want to check that out. Other than that, do a google search for chicken housing. Mainly what they need is a dry place for their food, a secure coop, and a secure fence. They are very susceptible to predators.

As far as housing chicks, get a large cardboard box, rubbermaid bin, or aquarium with high sides. Line it with newspaper, and put a heat lamp on top to make a hot spot in the upper 90s. Make sure they have a cooler area to escape to as well. It is very important that they also have clean fresh water and food all the time. Since they are so small even the tiniest bit of dehydration will kill them. Also, clean their pen *every day*. Otherwise the stench will overwhelm you. :puke02:

If you decide that you don't want grown chickens when they are older, you could also make a meal for yourself. :eats02:

Do you know what type you have? What do they look like? There is a variety known as the Cornish, and there are Cornish crosses. They reach 10 lbs in 6-8 weeks. If you let them live to adulthood they will have horrible arthritis and not be able to walk. If this is the type you have you might want to get some other breed of chicken for a pet.

OMG!! What if the one he keeps is a rooster!
Your mom is gonna LOVE this!

LOL!!
Think I'm gonna go make sure my kids aren't this enterprising!

Her name was Lola, she was a showchick....

Is anyone else getting a deja vu like vib that this is really some sort of bizarro world thread from a parallel universe? If I'd ever done hallucinogenic drugs I'd swear I was having a flashback! :crazy01:

"Hey! Cockfights at Jimmy's house after school! Pass the word!"

Ok, a wire cage will probably be the death of the chick. They don't do well in drafts, and really need that hot spot in the upper 90s. Normally when they get cold they just run underneath their mother, so you need to be able to give them that warmth.

Also, I've found when raising very few chick on their own, they seem less stressed if I put a plastic baby doll in the box with them as a baby sitter. They like to snuggle up to it.

They are yellow, One is black with a yellow chest. I think that keeping them in the garage will be ok in a coop, dont you? I have a parrt now and he is a good pet, He flies the house as he wants. I will look at the feet in the morning. I wouldn't want a rooster.

LMAO! I actually know this to be true (someone I know raises chickens). Soooooo cute when they cuddle their "doll". I'd forgotten about that "trick".

Reminds me of a joke.....

Why do chicken coops have two doors?

Cuz if they had four doors.......they'd be CHICKEN SEDANS!!!!! :roflmao:

:roflmao:

Is there a way you could e-mail me a pic? The yellow ones could be cornish or white leghorns. If you got the black one from a feed store it's probably either an australorp or a barred rock. What color are the legs of the black one?

no pics, the black one has orange looking feet that look like they have been spray painted on!!! They are eating A TON of food!!!! How much should I sell them for. I might just want to sell 3 or so to the pet store and maybe just get 5 dolars for them, Its better than keeping them in the freezer.
