Kaa was Eaten

Animal Loving Girl
I got home from work today, and apparently Kaa escaped from both his tank and his room, because the cats got to him in the hall just outside of the room. I can't believe it, I took every precaution I thought possible to keep him in his tank. They didn't play with him though, from the looks, just went for a killing blow and went on their way. I don't know how he got out of the room, either, the door is pretty close to the walls and the floor, there is hardly any gap at all. My poor little Kaa...

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I find the little ones hard to keep in myself sometimes. I hope you decided to open your heart to another corn..perhaps a yearling.

I am thinking of maybe another one, def a little bigger I think I want a Butter. But I want to wait a little while. I feel really bad, I know they are escape artists, that is why I decided to keep the cats and snakes seperate, in seperate rooms I mean. And he still managed to get out of the cage and room.

I am so sorry. We do as much as we can to safeguard our pets, and accidents still happen. I'm glad you're not giving up on having another snake.

Thanks so much for the sympathy. I think I am still in shock. I can't believe he is actually gone. I contacted a local Reptile Rescue, told him what happened, and the guy who runs the place is going to look over my tank and door to see if he can't figure out how Kaa escaped, and once we fix everything that can be fixed, if there is even anything obvious, he is going to keep in touch and let me know whenever he gets Corns in. I would like a Butter, but I really honestly don't care much. If I find a snake whose personality I like, I won't really care about the Morph.

I'm sorry to hear about this. You might want to consider a Critter Cage, with a sliding, locking lid. I wouldn't trust a cage that failed, again. Use it for a toad or something.

A sliding lid? I would think that would be easier to escape from. But I see what you mean. My cage had locks, and duck tape around the edge where cage and lid meet. I just don't know how he managed it... But obviously that cage is not snake proof; I am going to look for something else. Why take the risk.

The lid slides in from the front. The two sides are in a groove. At the back is a latch that snaps down and holds the lid so it can't slide out. You can hear it click shut.

Even with the critter cages, I recommend using a lock or pin to be sure the lid is all the way in locked position. /voice of experience

I'm really sorry about your loss. By chance did your tank have a rubber plug in the bottom? My first snake escape the little guy pried the plug up and went out the hole. I would also caution using duck tape as it can cause more damage then good. I've had a few escapes and one loss due to escape. All were my fault not checking that the lid was tight. Even with the sliding locking lids I put tape on the outside corners. The other lids let me just say we have about 30 river stones in our house all used as extra weight on lids.

I feel for you. When I got corney he was a challenge to keep in his cage. I finally got a brand new aquarium with a screen top and those locks for them. I will tell you, trying to open it was a pain but he never got out. The LOUD click when they snapped into place let me know he wasn't about to get out of his cage this time.... and he never got out again.

No, there wasn't a Rubber Plug; we put him in a large RubberMaid container, and he's been growing, he just shed his first whole skin 3 days ago, where I didn't have to help him shed, and he's tall, er, was long enough to reach these little shelves on the inside now. The only thing I can guess is that he was able to life the lid up a tiny bit, just enough to slip out, but I didn't think it was possible for him to be that strong, he was just a little guy, about 14 inches. I had Duck Tape around the edge near the handles, where I thought he could reach, but I guess he must have gotten past that, that's the only way he could have gotten out! THere is no other way...

I am, I definitely want to get another snake, I just adored having him, it was such an amazing experience, so different from every other animal I have ever had. But, I really don't know if I want another Corn. I love the Corn Snakes, but Kaa was so special I just don't know if I want something so similar to him. I might get another Corn, but I am looking into the Rosy Boas too. I have always loved Boas, and I was actaully looking into Rosy Boas too when I got Kaa. I was leaning towards them, but than I was working with Kaa, and I fell in love and just had to have HIM. I wish I would have known this would happen, I never would have gotten him... But of course that was impossible. I don't know, I am looking into both options, and I'll have to see what happens. Thanks again for all the condolences, I appreciate them.
