I have just updated the KingSnakes.com site to the latest version of vBulletin. I am considering converting this site over as well, but would like some feedback from users here before I consider such a move.

Anyway check it out and see what you think. It may take some getting used to, but there are even more bells and whistles there than this forum has available. Heck, I haven't played with them all myself!

The left oscillates?

I'm using Opera web-browser with a 1024 x 768 resolution and don't notice anything on the left.

Anyway, as with anything I think it'll take some time to get used to. If it'll make things more convenient for you here I wouldn't mind to terribly. I think we're all just used to this after such a long time.

I think it has a much neater appearance. Its not cluttered with stuff like this one seems to be at times.

Although whatever change you make I wish you would consider eliminating the right-hand vertical ads. They take up the space that could be used for when people post pictures that aren't all neat at 800 x 600 and they're distracting as all hell when they revolve and move.

I just like room to spread my text more or less, I feel cramped on here at times. =B

Sorry, but banner ads are going to be a given, no matter what message board I use. They help pay the bills when I can get people willing to pay for them on some of the sites.

Free sites aren't for free for the people who own and run them. :(

If I thought I could get donations on a monthly basis to pay the bills, well then it would be a different story.
 
I like the way the site is set up. I don't have kings so of course, I prefer this site. My husband wants a king though, so it will be the place to go if he does get one.

Seems to have been fixed already.

My main requirement for forums is that they load quickly and have good searching. Both this and the Kingsnakes forum are pretty good in that respect.

It would be nice to have a "favourite threads" bookmark facility though...
 
speaking of searching - it still has a 4 character minimum word length. sometimes that sucks. I remember a particular thread I wanted to look up by a phrase (it had an unusual 3 letter word)that was mentioned. The topic was so common that using a regular search took forever to go through the results. OTH everything else looks good.

You have the option of subscribing to a thread at the bottom of the posts for that thread. You can access your subscribed threads through the user cp. Wish I thought of that when I finally found the above link :headbang:
 
I changed the indexing on the KingSnakes.com search engine to allow 3 character searches. The people at vBulletin do not recommend this on higher traffic sites because the difference between the size of the index file on a 4 character and 3 character index is substantial. On large systems this can cause an overall slowness in getting results from any of the search requests.
 
I like it! Now if Only I could log in... it doesn't seem to recognize my password, and my request for help hasn't resulted in anything being sent to my email address..... so I have a lot to say, and I'll say it once I'm in through the front door! :) Nice site, as always, I especially like your logo. :)
 
i haven't tried to use all the neat gizmos and buttons, but the site looks great. Although i breed both graybands and corns, it probably won't take over me using the this, cornsnakes.com, site as my main forum. Maybe if you could get the word out in the alterna community and setup an alterna area you could get some major support because i know alterna hunters are always looking for a good alternate forum other than the alternapage. just my .02.:cheers:

One of the other domain names I have sitting in the wings is GrayBands.com. :)

If there appears to be enough interest and requests for it, I could create a subforum for Graybands, or the mexicana group in general.

But I don't want to make it overly complex right off the bat. That sometimes scares people away.

One thing I wish was here, kingsnakes.com, or faunaclassifieds is a feeder forum. But I agree, that doing things simple is the best way to begin.

File Size Limitations

I was posting a message to the kingsnakes.com forums and was not very happy with the file size limitations. 37.2K seemed a bit small as a maximum file size limitation. So far that is the only thing I do not care for on that forum.
 
Ah! I just now found the section to change that limitation. That new version of vBulletin is a whole new animal. The size limit has been increased substantially.

Sigh, I need to talk to my programmer about converting the FaunaClassifieds.com site over to this new version. I'll bet that will be a bear to do though, as FC has had a substantial number of modifications done to it. One thing that is intriguing in the new version is that it looks like I can set it so that a forum link can go to an external website. That means I could set up the CornSnakes forum on FaunaClassifieds to link directly to THIS site. Plus I could set up this site and kingsnakes.com to directly link together if they were all running this new version. I could also tie other people's forums into FaunaClassifieds and have a HUGE linking network of message boards. Wouldn't THAT be something?

But converting FC will be one darn HUGE project..... :awcrap:
 
Rich, how about showing the date of each posting?

Maybe that's a personal preference choice already available. i'll go look.
 
As far as I can see, each post is date and time stamped.
 
Looks pretty snazzy - I'm so used to how things are here, though :rolleyes: I'm just one of those habit-bound people, i guess.
 
Can I have more feedback on this, please? The more I use the new version of vBulletin, the more I like it. This site would be relatively simple to convert over to it. My FaunaClassifieds site would be a major job, so I'm not sure that will ever happen.

So let me know. If I decide to convert it over, there will be NO going back....
