Learning a few things from an expert

Hey Kath! When can I borrow Bill???? I LOVE taking pics of herps. Its challenging but that just makes it all the more fun to get that one shot!

I thought the Mars reptile show last weekend was going to have a photo contest like they had last year. But they didn't. So the second day of the show, when I was out of $$$$:(, I attended with my camera, got permission from Tim Hoen running the show and from the different people at the booths and went running around snapping pics. ( Anything I eventually want to own someday in the future, I got a pic of. ) They're mostly all staged but I still got some great shots. I got a darling shot of a little girl petting a beardie! I sent a CD of my best shots to the guy, Tim Hoen, who put the show together and my pics may turn up on the website. COOL!

But what I wouldn't give for a lesson or two from Bill! Its getting a little cool to go herping here and we don't have the access to the wide variety of herps you do. But it would still be a pretty nifty experience to learn from Bill.

Its getting almost perfect to go herping here, unfortunately when I went I only found 2, I turned around to go get the first one off the road (a baby bull snake) but the people behind me ran the little guy over.... Then the second one I saw was a DOR Texas Longnose snake, they are really pretty in person, I wish the little guy was alive....

Awesome shots! Makes me want to head out to the desert here in Utah and see what I can see. :)

Do it.

Beautiful photos! My fav is that angry rattlesnake tracking Bill. I think that one is magnificent.

I enjoyed every single photo and the narrative. Just out of curiosity, what was it that you learned about photographing herps from Bill? What did he learn from you? Maybe I can learn something if you share the wealth :).

Thanks Mrs. Z. I like that shot, too. Well, I learned to get down lower, to move the animal to a nice looking spot, and to take the time to get it to pose how you want it to. The last thing takes a lot of patience. I have a lot of patience, but I don't have as much patience as Bill does. What did Bill learn? He learned that Ethiopian food is delectable. And if he was listening, he learned about the reason that taxonomic changes sometimes take a while to trickle down and sometimes aren't always accepted--the difference between a cladistic and evolutionary systematics philosophy of taxonomy. But I'm not sure if he zoned out for that . . . ;)

I especially like the one posed on the piece of wood, with the rattle sticking almost straight up.

I can tell y'all had lots of fun while I was back home feeding and cleaning baby snakes, lol! I will let Bill know about this thread so he can see it for himself, and relive a great trip!

Thanks Kathy! We surely did have a good time!

I had lots of lots of fun too, Steph. Looking forward to hooking up again next time!

There've been lots of times I've gone out and found nothing. In fact, the first time Bill and I went out we drove until 2am and found nothing except DOR stuff. When I'm alone, I usually hike for that reason. That way, even if I find nothing, at least I've had a nice walk.

Hi Steph n Bill!!

I'll add the gushy/jealous... it looks fantastic AND fun!

Carrie..the girl and I would love to go with you :)
