Leopard Gecko project

Kokopelli

Resident Boa Fanatic
Well... I was tricked somehow and now I own -5- Leopard geckos!
A friend called me, telling me that he saw some really orange leopard geckos for sale... I was skeptic but when I saw the pictures and learned that those were actually the geckos involved... I asked if I could get them.
My friend actually wanted them but he told me that it's okay if I'll go on ahead since I started a breeding colony with the pair I got anyways...

So... long story short, I planned on getting one, possibly two. I ended up getting all three available babies.

I don't know much about their genetics and I don't know how to recognize a hypo baby(they go through a rather dramatic change as babies)... but these three are insanely orange, but with more melanin than the pair I got.

Sadly two of the three are in shed... so I didn't take photos of them. The one that wasn't though...

I think the colors are insane.

And a short update on the two I brought 2 weeks ago:

Thanks for peeking.

They're cool Oren! I know what you mean, they're hard to resist! I finally broke down and picked one up when I was in Daytona. I don't know anything about Leo genetics, but the one I got is an Afghan X Hyper Axanthic :shrugs: All I know is that it's pretty cool, and even cooler looking under the black light, lol. The only thing that kept me from getting more is that it's still too small to tell what sex it is, even though I've been calling it a her. Do you have them set up in a display viv? I ended up building a Leo mansion, lol...

Nah not yet. They are each housed seperately... when they are adults I imagine they'll be in a display viv.

From what I read, you can house females together, so the plan was to get 2 females for the big Leo viv, and a male in another until they're old enough to breed. Is that what you've heard as well?

Yup. However, when they are young, they tend to be overzealous during feeding hours and that can end with one gecko biting anothers' tail. I was told that I should wait until they are sub-adults before co-habbing.
You can sex them properly only when they are around 3-4 months so... it'll be a while before I know what's the male to female ratio in my wee group.

Thanks, that's good to know!

I just got a pair of these guys myself... I'm finding I actually prefer some traits in them over my snakes, and breeding mealworms is a fun experience.

Anyone mind if I turn this into a progression thread?

I took them all out for a photoshoot- and I think I got the DSLR thing :)

0.0.3 hypo tangerine, hets unknown.

Cute little buggers. Too bad three of them are in shedding process- it's very frequent at this age it seems.

They are all beauties!! I LOVE the orange ;)

I have a super hypo tangerine carrot tail baldy leo and she is orange....but not like your crew, their colors just POP!

I knew my girl was a girl right out of egg because the temps were set for girls, she will be my only one though...I thought about getting her a friend but decided against it since problems can still arise later on down the road even with 2 girls being housed together so I will just leave things be :p

Thank you! :)

Many if not most keepers I know keep leos(once they are old enough of course) together. I don't think it should deter you if that's what you really want.
If you don't really feel the need/desire to keep more than one though, than keeping just one is perfectly fine :)

I keep my two together, but if I sex them once they're big enough and find that they are anything but female-female, it will be time to buy a new tank.

Very pretty Oren! I like your very dark tang guy on top! Dark leos are very pretty to me :)

In that case I am crossing fingers right along with you :)

And thank you. I imagine he'll brighten up though, he is barely a month old... :)

Possibly, possibly not. Something I've noticed with leos is that it's a headache to try and predict how they will look as adults from how they look as babies... they have some really crazy changes!
