Leopard Gecko question

I have what I was told are two female leos. They are in a 30 breeder, which is 30" x 18". Multiple hides and basking spots, but only one food dish. When I feed them at night, they seem to react aggressively to one another. They will butt up against each other, and try to stand on top of one another... usually one will then run away while the other eats. Sometimes they will eat together... but not usually.

Is this behavior a problem? Could I have two males? Or is it normal for the ladies to act this way? Should I just get a second dish? They both look fat and healthy.

If these are in fact two females, could I at some point in the future add a male or another female to the tank?

Yes female Leos will compete for food, I would recommend getting another dish, or switching to a food they have to chase after. :D
You *could* add another Leo, however they will have territory issues and there will be fighting. You can somewhat get around this by moving all 3 to a larger tank or rearranging the tank furniture when you add the new one. I'd only add nother male if you're looking to breed, if the females aren't receptive they will be stressed by him. JMO. :)

When I first got my two females, I had seen that they'd been together in a much more sparsely decorated tank than you described setting up for you girls, and not very well taken care of (they appeared, for lack of a better word, completely emaciated). So, when I got them home, I replicated their set-up...and immediately, within a couple of mins of putting them into their tank, Flaca bit Rosa. If Rosa walked past Flaca anywhere in the tank, Flaca would wait until she saw Rosa's back leg & just go for the kill. Obviously, I separated them asap. I thought that maybe it was the new abundance of food & warmth & so forth, but -- not really. New territory -- and Flaca bit Rosa again (I wanted to see if they could be compatible again...). At least in my case, it was all behavior.

(But, it really got me thinking...despite the fact that the previous owner took terrible care of my girls, didn't the owner notice at all that Flaca was biting Rosa -- wouldn't Flaca have bitten her while under the previous owner's care, too, and not just wait for me to take them on??? )

And, I don't know if this helps...

when i kept Leo's. I also had 2 females in a 30 long. I never noticed them fighting at all. as far as food went they mostly got crickets. but i would as feed them mealies and waxies. the mealies and waxies where in a dish, and i never noticed any aggression between them. they were never close though. they each had their own place to hide. that they seemed comfortable in. you might want to double check to make sure you don't have males.

How big do they have to be to easily tell?? The people I bought them from looked at their undersides and proclaimed them both females....

My females get along great in groups. I keep 1.3 per colony. If you have 2 males together there will be a battle.

Personally, I would keep them apart. I keep all mine in separate cages, when I first started I had 2 females in a cage and one just was not eating. The other female just started to out compete for food.
Since you are new to leopard geckos, I would get a second 10 gallon and place the other female in that setup. This way, there is no chance of any issues happening.
