Lies....

Out of all that I thought I knew, was a lie. My friend tried telling me how to take care of a snake but it all was bogus. I've been reading through this site and found out that I'm not supposed to be using Pine bedding, which I'm doing anyways. I was told I can power feed my snake, but that isn't good either. It's a good thing I came across this site.

A question, are you supposed to clean your snakes? Like dampen a clean wash cloth with luke warm water and let them slither through it?

Speaking of water...

Do you need to fill the water bowl with luke warm water or does it matter is it's cold or warm?

And veggiation... I have a huge peice of drift wood in my tank that is screwed to a rock... Purchased at a pet store. It was left outsite for quite a few months but I clean it out but pressure washing it and letting a steaming hot shower with all hot water go down on it for 15 minutes...

Thinking anything in the drift wood would be dead, I noticed little bugs crawling around... Very small... I'm sure they are not mites though. They look like very very small black ants.... Are they mites? They look identical to a black ant but are really really small.

Hmm Anything else I need to ask?

Is it ok to get the snake used to having his head touched to where he doesn't jerk around? Because if that's a bad thing, I already got him used to it. I'm sure as heck not feeding him live pray though due to that.

well as far as the pine goes I use pine shavings and from what I have hear they're a few peeps on here that use it also.. some people dont use it.. Power feeding Im not sure of what that is.. Im new to snakes also... I wouldnt put the log in there with snakey if it has anything crawling on it whether it be mites or not..hopefully someone else can help u better than me..

Well I noticed them black little things after I put it in the cage with Halo, but halo doesn't seem to have any mites. He looks clean and healthy with no black spots on him.

Pine is bad for any animal to use for bedding switch to aspen and power feeding is also bad for them.

You don't need to clean your snake unless they get poop or something on them.

There should always be water for them so it will be room temperature.

If the drift wood was outside you should put it in the oven, there are directions for that on here somewhere, search for treating wood.

Hope that helped.

Pine and some other woods have toxic oils ... they cause Respiratory Infections(RI's)...if not caught and treated by a qualified herp vet fast enough they RI's can kill your snake.

Feeding ... here is a good sample feeding plan provided by fellow forum member Roy Munson, just get a digital kitchen scale that weighs in 1 gram increments and you can follow it easily http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50106&highlight=munson+plan

Wood logs .... I buy them for my snakes and always put in the oven at 250 degrees for 15-20 min and then make sure to use oven mitts to remove and let cool for at least 30 min before putting in to your snake's viv....have never had a bug problem yet.

Water ..... Kathy Love author of The comprehensive owners guide to Corn Snakes and corn snake guru will tell you that if you are using city water(chlorinated) the chlorine is not good, but that unless a qualified herp vet ok's it do not use de-chlorinator either as it is adding chemicals to your water, instead fill a jug of water and let it sit uncovered over night and the chlorine evaporates of in 24 hrs....water is now suitable for snake consumption.

Head touching ... fine if your snake is not getting to freaked out by it...some will not mind to much some will.

Live Prey ... your right bad idea... live prey does not want to be prey and will some times become the hunter and injure your snake whether or not it has a strong startle reflex. You do not want to chance lunch nibbling on your snake...good idea to stick with frozen thawed.

Sounds like you are on the right path by doing your own research and by having joined this forum...it is full of great information and people...you will be able to learn so much here...welcome to the addiction!!

I had read in Kathy's book about not using chlorinated water, so I have been dechlorinating my water for the 2 years I've been keeping snakes. I use the same stuff I used for my fish aquariums, on the theory that if it's safe enough for fish to live in, it should be safe for the snakes to drink. I haven't had any problems, but in view of the above post, wondered if anyone has a different thought?

As I understand it, there's no hard evidence one oway or the other concerning the dechlorinating chemicals and herps. I prefer to avoid adding more chemicals to the water, so I personally just leave fill a gallon container 3/4 full and leave the lid off for 24 hours. The chlorine dissipates from the surface of the water, and no chemicals were added.
