Lighting!

I wouldn't use a UV light because over time it could cause your corn to go blind. The only lamp you should have is a heat lamp (red) nothing to bright.
I can't believe that someone would have the gall to comment about part of a conversation you were having with someone! How Rude !! :realhot:

PHEW!!! Had me scared for a minute there, Lennycorn. I use a red incandescent light for night viewing, and thought there was something about them I was gonna wake up to a dead snake or something. It throws off a touch[/] of heat, but it's only a 25W bulb.

Yea...those fry lights will bake your snake. :eek1: :puke01:

No, I wasn't kidding.
I have a red heat lamp, but I have it set such a way that it's 80-85 on the warm side. It heats 2 tanks for me. I have it set on a stand far away enough that it keeps a good temp on the warm side and doesn't get too hot.
If that's bad, let me know.

From what you describe :shrugs: I guess? but what are your humidity levels up too?? Doesn't it dry it out? And... What are you using to read the temps with and where??
To me using an UTH is much easier to controll temps and placement of heat.

My humidity levels are around 60 so no it doesn't dry it out. I use a thermometer and a humidity gauge that are on the warm side so I know what that temp is. I've been thinking about getting a UTH..but that costs money. And right now the setup I have is working fine.
And yes, I have 3 snakes. The 2 sharing the red heat lamp are hatchlings in 10g enclosures sitting on a shelf. And the heat lamp is placed in the middle so they both get heat, and obviously it's not too much if their temp is right.
The 3rd snake is a 4 year old who is in a 20g and has his own lamp. But this is not a red heat lamp so I can just stick it on top of his enclosure.
So I'm obviously doing nothing wrong with my snakes.

Well with the level that high with a heat lamp I guess it's fine. But it just sounds scary to me. Are you using a probe with that thermometer? :shrugs:
Good gauges??

But people have different set up. Over in Europe, lights for a heat source is more popular. :shrugs: It is argued that corn need "belly" heat and light tend to dry up the VIV. Using a UTH you can have the heat on all the time. (on one side of the tank) without leaving the light on 24/7.
Most here either use a rack system with flexwatt and room light or tanks/cages with UTH and a retrostat and a light for the benefit of the owner. With most using a thememeter with a probe above the UTH but under the bedding. It's all spelled out here in the forrum. Your call!
