Little Shop of Horror!

Was a pet store like this in my city... the humane society taped a bug to me and sent me there to "work" for a week... was shut down and the owner fined 2 million. The humane society pushed for new laws to have people who run places like that fined and arrested. The laws passed. A store like that now is fined around the same, and the owner / managers are arrested... max sentance 5 years. In the process of helping keep my eye on the only 2 remianing pet stores in my province now hehe. I got Treasure from one, he was in a 5 gallon tank with another corn, both in shed, both under a 120W light, no water, no hides... nothing. His tank mate died 3 days after I got him >.< Wish I had had an extra $225 to buy the other one too =/

Just keep us updated on anything that happens! If allelse fails, maybe you could start a neighborhood petition or even an internet one. I'm sure a lot of people here would "sign" that one. :)

In all honesty, I would avoid contacting the SPCA/ASPCA/PETA. It is these organizations that are trying to push laws through to make it illegal to own exotics (reptiles/amphibians, etc). Most of these organizations will put down any exotic immediately rather then find it a new home. Animal cruelty cases gives them additional ammunition for their reasoning.

Grant it, not all ASPCA or SPCA are against exotics. Do a bit of research on your local organization prior to contacting them...You may make things worse then better...

OMG I sure hope I didn't make things worse for these animals by contacting authorities. I did consider not contacting the SPCA but when I found the "Humane" Society in that county to be inadequate (by my standards). I went to the contact us link and left an email with both agencies. I feel something must be done. My budget won't allow me to purchase all of these animals and even if it did how could I possibly give adequate care to all of these creatures? In addition it would only make room for the owner to acquire more animals. I don't want to fuel the no reptiles in captivity position of these agencies either. Any suggestions from you would be much appreciated and carefully considered. (meaning I will do my best not to let my emotions guide my judgement)

I would still contact the agencies and tell them your story WITHOUT giving the name of the pet store. That way they will know what is going on and can tell you what they would do without actually doing it since they wouldn't know the name of the store.

I'm lucky with the humane society here, the woman that runs it is wonderful! If the animlas are up to be put to sleep, she takes them home and finds them new homes =)
I was checking out some of the "beware" lists on some websites, and this pet store you are talking about is listed on at least 1/2 of them. Contacted my ex (him and his Dad are super lawyers in NY city hehe) they're gunna check out the state laws and see about shutting that store down =) If theres a legal way, they'll find it =)

The Humane Society near my parents in Fresno are very proactive. She had called about a horse that was very thin, and they returned her call in just a few hours, sent someone out to see the horse, and let her know what the response was.

I finally got an email back from one of the agencies I had contacted, they basically just gave me info on other agencies to contact, but at least they responded (from Utah!). I also need to find out what the laws are specific to my state. Apparently food, water and shelter are the only requirements in many. Already listed on at least 1/2 of them huh? Insane, something definitely needs to be done. Where do I find these "beware" lists?
Thank you and please let me know what your friends find out.

Angela

Here's a link to Washington's animal cruelty laws. Read through them. Maybe you have legal grounds to make the Humane Society take action.

What you need to do is contact the agencies prior to reporting and finding out their stand on Exotics. If they are opposed to Exotics, it should be very apparent when you question them. You need to do the research before you send them in; otherwise the Herps will just be put down anyway.

They're animal protection agency page lists hehe.. I donate around $2000 a year to a select few agencies and I get access to the lists that way =)
