I am just wondering how many people feed live mice to thier snakes? In the U.K it is illegal to feed them live, so we have to either buy them from the pet shop frozen or breed and freeze the ourselves. I have to say I doubt I could whatch the snake eat a live mouse, I find it difficult whatching them eat the mouse full stop, it looks as if they are going to choke on it.

I used to feed Sienna live - thats all she ate before I bought her. Then when I found out that she had come home with mites, and that mites could be transferred to the snake from live prey (which I purchased from the same shop I had gotten her from) we quickly switched to f/t. Sienna had no adjustment problems whatsoever. I didn't even have to wiggle the thawed mouse for her, she attacked it right away just like always.

I feed f/t to my corns; on occasion my Suri will get picky and only take live. If you're into the cuteness factor of rodents, you may get squeamish the first few times....in that case, I suggest playing "The Circle of Life" from "The Lion King" while you feed your snake. :)

As for me, rodents are vile vermin. I'm happy to thin the herd.

regards,
jazz

Too funny... had me laughing pretty good on that one. :)

I haven't known anyone with snakes in a while, so I was really amazed when I found out you can feed frozen mice. I think that's great, myself. As much as I enjoy the pet store I don't want to go every week. I think frozen is just a much more convenient and humane way to feed. I used to love my neighbor's ball python, but I couldn't stand to watch it eat a live bunny.

Tho I have to admit that I've been having fun grossing people out with the dozen frozen pinkies in my freezer. LOL

Sorry, I had to post this...this was taken about 20mins ago. I call it: OW OW OW OW OW

I feed all my hatchlings live pinkies, always have. When the prey gets big enough to harm the snakes, I knock em out. I have never fed F/T and don't plan on it. I don't want to start another debate on the subject, just answering the question. When I first started keeping snakes, frozen rodents were not readily available. So this is all I've ever done

ddot, though I did say awwww when I saw it, I have to say you have a knack for photography! It is a very well timed shot with excellent clarity. I WISH I could take pictures that good. You should go freelance.

I have to 2nd that, that picture is amazing. Fortunately both of my snakes will eat live and frozen so i do feed live some time for my pleasure. Just havent gotten around to placing mice/rats in the freezer. Please no lecturing i already now how most people here feel about feeding live rats

Thanks guys! I'm in the process of getting my own camera(I've been using my roommate's temporarily) His camera isn't the best and my pics have been coming out washed out, but I have got some really good shots.

Oh and keeping with thread topic: Yes I do feed live...I will keep CottonBall on live for the rest of her life, but if I get any more, they will get f/t.

"Am looking to get bashed for this"...Why keep CB on live?? Have you tried him/her on f/t??? I see no reason to keep your snake on live after the fuzzy point unless they ABSOLUTELY will not take f/t. I'm sure you've read the threads with the pros vs. cons of live vs/ft so I wont get into that. I'm just curious. Not being rude about your choice, just curious.

Well...I may be swayed yet to switch over to f/t. But as for now, I have a couple of reasons why I go with live:

EDIT: Ok, I've accepted the error of my ways :D

I feed F/T now :p

Thanks for asking!

Yeah, I had similar reasons for keeping Sienna on live for so long. But after the problem we had with the mites (I know you've probably heard this story a million times from me by now, lol) I didn't want to risk her getting re-infected from the live mice. But, I guess if it works for you then great! I don't really have the problem feeding live that some people do. For some reason it just doesn't seem entirely cruel to me, just more natural. However, I will just leave it at that to avoid creating conflict on this thread.

Which is easy to do regarding this topic, however, you won't find any conflict from me. Especially since I AM still considered a "snake newbie".

Thanks KatieL!

sadly its a cheapo digital camera that I had to borrow from my roommate: FUJIFILM - FinePix A210

I had to work REALLY hard to get them to come out to decent quality. I'm in the process of getting another camera for myself. Thanks for the compliment!
