I think it's probably your monitor. I use a color-calibrated HiDef LCD flat screen, and I can see the details of the rocks inside the shadows. They're just regular shadows...
 
This is what I'm using. A good picture is about as possible as wings growing out of my butt and flying me around the world. Although that would be pretty cool.

Finally got a newish monitor hooked up.


Really nice shots. Not overly dark like I thought. Especially like the sidewinder's eye on the first one. :p
