I was in the attic of my Fiance's familys feed store and i found this lost treasure. i have to talk to her grandfather, but im going to try to get this, clean it up, put a new bottom in it with UTH's, place a light in the top and a divider in the middle and use it as a VIV for my corns... i will then be able to put their 20 gal's in storage for later use and free up space while in the process....

Looks as though it could potentially be a nice double viv.

The only concern I would have is it looks like it must have been sitting up there for a long time. That being said you have no idea: what may have been in it, peed on it, defecated on it, or left what kind of viruses behind on it.

So my question to you is with the safety and health of your snakes in mind. How will you be able to thoroughly clean it to ensure it will be safe for them? If it were all glass you could clean it with 1 part bleach to 9 parts water and know that it would kill virtually anything other than crypto but that unit is made of at least two different mediums, wood and glass.

I myself do not know of a wood cleaner that would be safe to use and kill virtually everything. When you do clean the wood portion you will also need to make sure that the finish on the wood is perfect(completely sealed) as any cleaner will get into the wood and then leach out over time. You may want to strip all of the wood down and reseal it completely and then clean it.

The front panels(white ones) I can not tell if are wood or not. If they are something like particle board you will not be able to clean them as anything will have soaked into it.

Just my opinion and some thoughts to consider.

i am sorry to inform you that that will not be a suitable treasure for you and your beloved snakes. You will need to deliver that to me immediately.

i plan on cleaning it very thoroughly and resealing it, also i have just had a quick glance at it and got excited about the possibilities so i will take a closer look tomorrow and find out what the white parts are made of, hopefully they are just painted over regular wood... i cant stand particle board.

Yeah I agree particle board sucks. I do think, coming from a family heavy with carpenters, that if it is all real wood, it will be usable so long as you thoroughly clean it, sand it down and reseal all of the wood. Just be sure to make sure that you do not use it for at least a week or so after sealing it so that all fumes are gone.

:idea:Why not put in glass and make it a quad viv, one of the pics looks like it has a bottom shelf behind the white stuff, no reason you could not convert to a beautiful quad unit! :shrugs: A space saver and more room for more snakes!! Win Win!!

looks like im going to be getting it soon. next week we will be moving it out of the attic and placing it in the workshop so i can start cleaning it up. i will keep taking progression pictures.

well, my future grandfather in law thought about it and figured if i was interested in it then maybe someone would pay good money for it.... so he doesnt want to give it up just yet.... whats funny is that he has a desk that someone offered $3000 for and wouldnt sell it because someone may want to pay more...lol.... anyway i was told by his wife and my future mother-in-law that in a few months he is going to see me building stuff for my snakes and remember that he has that up stairs that i could use and end up giving it to me...lol. so i may still end up with it in the future, but for now i got a plastic shelving unit and just got a new corn and am paying on the 55gal viv that he or she is supposed to come with, so who knows. i am still praying that he lets me get it from him so i can make an awesome TV stand VIV out of it for my bedroom or living room...

That's to bad,I was looking forward to seeing how it turned out. Here's hoping it still comes your way.
