Lost a baby

I purchased a red albino from the local pet shop, I would have gone through a breeder, but well I held her, big mistake! and well I shelled out the extra 70.00 for her. Anyhow, I got her home, let her adjust for for a couple days, then attempted a feed her a small f/t pinky, no go, gave her a couple more days, still no go. Tried, braining, live, just nothing would even tempt her interest. she then regurged something that looked like a wax worm! Right after this she started to regurge water. She died very shortly after that, despite everything I tried for her:awcrap: I was in constant contact with the pet store, and at one point she suggested I try and feed her a wax worm, so I can pretty much figure where she got that worm. Im also know that they feed thier pets on the substrate which in there store consists of dirt, sand and other types of materials. She also houses the corns in one tank, despite my explaining what can happen. My little girl had a black irregular looking spot on her belly about midway, I am wondering, do you think that this could have been caused by either the worm or possible being impacted? The pet store I should note replaced her, with one that never got a chance to enter there viv, I was waiting when the pulled up from the city to take her. He is doing fine and eating well. Sorry this is so long, but just curious what you guys thought about the black spot.

More than likely, the black spot indicates that there was a problem in the digestive tract, i.e. possible impaction or a perforation.

If problematic feeders sometimes the snakes almost re-ingest their own stomach lining causing a weakness to the stomach so when eating can cause the stomach to rupture. Also if the area was a greenish colour it would have been perotinitus (sp) I think! I had a pair of creamsicle het stripes die the same day with acute perotinitus!! I was well and truly abgry and upset!!

Actually, what you are describing as a black spot about half-way down the ventral side sounds more like the normal appearance of the liver than anything else. If you only saw one dark spot, I am sure that's what it was. All corns have this (obviously), but they show through more clearly on the more translucent varieties of corns (amels, snows, blizzards, etc.) and those animals with clear belly patterns (bloodreds [all varieties] and motlies).

When a corn dies, though, the gall bladder often ruptures, leaving a dark green discoloration on the ventral side, which appears to spread out under the scales. It almost looks like the effect one sees if one touches the corner of a paper towel to a spot of green dye.

I'm really sorry to hear that your little one died! It's never fun, and the fact that it sounds as though the previous owner (the shop) did not properly care for the baby, makes it even worse. It sure doesn't sound like you did anything wrong, though. However, I wouldn't get a replacement from THAT shop, and when you do buy another little one, please keep it away from the same tools/tanks you used with your first. If it was killed by some disease, you don't want to expose your new little one to the same stuff!

Good luck; I hope this helps a bit --

Re Lost baby

Hi too late I did get the replacement from the same store, but as I stated I got her before she even got to thier tanks, she is healthy , and has been eating right from the get go. I steralized all the tanks, as well as dishes and hides, as I am in the piercing industry I have high level hard surface cleaners, which I rinsed many times to ensure no chemicals would harm my pets. I am very fussy with my tanks. As for the spot, I dont believe it was her liver, I have a snow who doesnt show anything near that, nor does my new albino. the comment about the ink on the paper towel however describes it very closely, it almost appeared to be close to the skin rather then deep inside. This spot was there before she passed away. I do not plan to get any more reptiles from this pet store but only though some very excellent breeders.
I thank you for your posts and interest on my situation. I still miss my baby but I cant bring her back, just next time I will be more careful where I get them from. Im affraid Im corn addicted and probably will have many more over the years! Thanks again, and thanks for having this forum here, its been a great help to me and many others Im sure.
