Lost Corn Found!

Hi, I bought Jake in August 2011 when he was 8 weeks old, by October he had escaped! we learned a lesson about vents that day. By mid December with temps dropping below freezing we were convinced he had died somewhere.

The local reptile shop where we bought him kept telling us he would turn up and we would smell him if he had died, because he was so badly missed we asked if we were ok to buy another and have Jake join our new corn should he ever come home. The reptile shop said yes, corns are very sociable and live happily together.

Guess what? Jake turned up today, He is as small as he was when he went which is now about a third smaller than our other corn, both corns are from the same clutch.

I phoned the reptile shop worried about putting them together, they advised me on feeding and keeping him apart for a few days and then just introducing them.

I don't know what made me google it but I did, everywhere is saying corn snakes are solitary and cannibals. Other places are saying it's ok.

Now I'm stressing, I have a massive viv manufactured by us, There is a chameleon on the top, a corn snake underneath (in separate enclosures of course) I don't know if I can fit another snake tank at the bottom, as it is it almost touches the ceiling (chameleons need lots of height)

Someone please offer some sound advice. Thanks xx

maybe get him a 10 gl for now, or something cheap. Then worry about bigger as he grows?

Most advice here will be not to co-hab. There is a link somewhere in this forum showing snakes eating other snakes. i've done it before but no longer do I. I decided it's not worth the risk. Many people say they do it with no problem, I didn't see problems when I did it but decided that most of the people here were smarter than me so i separated them.

I'm glad you found Jake!! I've had escapes and it's scary. I've been lucky to always have found mine quickly but still very scary.

You can squeeze a ten gallon in anywhere. I have one on my kitchen table. Please don't put the little one in with the other one.

And I'm so happy he's been found!

Aww thanks guys, I was really worried. I can't believe the shop told me it was ok, I'm new to corn snakes and they seemed so knowledgeable and friendly. Guessing they've never had any problems because I don't believe they would deliberately tell me it was ok.

I've studied my whole set up (don't laugh) So the chameleon at the top, Corn underneath, dog cage at the bottom. All I need to do is shift the cage, add a shelf and a glass front (the sides and back are there already) vents, light, seal it all and decorate.

Jake is safe and alone. Can I ask something else? he has been gone nearly 5 months so I assumed he would be hungry, I've got him boxed with a hideaway some bedding and water and 3 pinkies. He has been in there 7 hours now and not touched them, I'm gonna need to take them out coz they're going crinkly! yuk! will he be alright? he was well vicious when we first found him but was handled about 2 hours ago (to make sure he was still alive) and he was as placid and loving as we remember. Why is he not eating? when should I worry? he looks really healthy, could he be full up on monster spiders?

Thanks again. x

He was found in the kitchen by the back door, the weather here has just started to warm up. The only logical place I can think he had been hidden was behind the dishwasher. We had looked there but obviously missed him. He probably would have just slithered off had my little dog not been whining at the back door refusing to come indoors. Jake was found striking out at the dog! He has settled nicely now and has been handled carefully. He seems happy and calm. We are just so relieved to have finally found him.

Hi, Cornsnake Lovers,
I just found this forum today and think I will learn lots from this community about the care and love of corn snakes. I acquired my first, a year old Reverse Okeetee as seen in my avatar, last August at a local reptile exhibit. I also got at the same time a smaller recently hatched Creamsickle that has since escaped and gone missing somewhere in my building. ( So much for uninformed newbies making bonehead mistakes - the lid was not on as securely as I have since learned it should have been.) I am wondering when I should give up of this lost little guy as he has now been missing since December 2, 2011. Can he possibly survive on his own with little access to food or water all that time?

I had an escaped adult survive seven months before being found. Don't give up hope!

If you're in a block, the only downside is that he might well be in another apartment by now. They can sneak through the tiniest cracks, vents and cavity walls. My lass turned up in the downstairs flat's saucepan cupboard...

When it comes to keeping snakes in the tank, I find I have to "bang" on the metal lid. At first he tried to escape as soon as I put him in, then realized than "banging" meant that the tank is now escape-proof. I also put electrical tape on the corner gaps because Marty likes to push up the lid and squeeze through the most impossibly small holes. With the ends taped and the lid in place, he seldom makes an escpe attemt. Hope this helped SOMEONE, and wasen't just rambling. :crazy01:

Back In My Sweet Baby's Arms...

Thanks everyone for your helpful suggestions on finding my lost newest baby corn. It turned up this morning caught on a sticky tape trap I had set last night in my office before going home. I will try to post pictures if I can figure out how to upload and connect them to this thread. :sobstory:

I once was Lost But now I'm Found...

Then Diana Ross sang, "Set me free... Why don't you babe.. la la la"

What I forgot to say in my original post was that I had all but given up on my Creamsickle and had bought a new baby from petsmart as a replacement which went missing the 2nd day I had him. The follow-up posts were about that baby and hope springs eternal that the creamsickle wil resurface.

Glad you caught your baby.

Anyone reading this- DO NOT USE ANY TAPE EXCEPT BLUE PAINTERS TAPE for a snake trap. It is a miracle this baby didn't die outright or be killed (accidentally) in the removal...

If only I had a simular ending! I think Worm got outside... well, regardless, he is a normal and there are plenty of mice outside...
