Making Clay Pot Hides

Hi-
I know some people use the clay pots as hides. Do you break them to make a hole on the edge to make an entrance while upside down or do you just lie them on their sides? If you do break them, how do you break just what you want and not the whole pot? Just wondering. I'm not having great luck with this. Thanks!

Exactly what I needed. Thank you. Now I can get to making some nice, inexpensive hides for the little ones.

but
be sure to use brand new pots
the terracotta will absorb any pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals used with plants and soils. these then can greatly harm a reptile
 
I have had great sucess simply puling bits away with a pair of pliers and then filing off the crack.
 
I take a small file and score a line around the pot wherever I want it to break to weaken it, and then tap it with a hammer & chisel.
 
I tried other ways but I always ended up whacking it just a little too hard. Trust me pliers is the way to go I can guarantee it i easier than a chisel
 
You kinda have to tap, not whack if you use the chisel - tap a little, move down the line, tap a little, move down, tap until it splits. I like the method just b/c you get a pretty clean break that way.
I'll try the pliers next time I need a hide!
 
other than for my scorps, I actually use the plastic pots for the snakes... easier and more thorough cleaing...
