i just fed my snake Salazar his pinky today and his last feeding was 5 days ago and he swallowed it in about a minute :eatpointe and he's already poking his head out of his hide box and stretching into his water bowl. I was advised to try feeding him two pinkies next time cause they usually take longer to digest before they start moving around. what do you guys think?? he is about 14-15 inches right now.
thanks in advance

I started feeding mine two pinkies peer feeding and so far she's always more into eating the second one than the first...I figured it'd be the other way around. :/ She's a little over a year old now.

Well, just a thought, but my snow almost no matter the size of meal I give her immediately sticks her head back out of her hide right after she gets back in her tank (unless she is in a shed cycle, then she stays hidden). So I don't know that sticking his head out is necessarily a sign that he is still hungry and definitely not digested. But every case is different. :shrugs:

well right now hes crawling up the side of his cage and no lump is visible.. the first time i fed him, he stayed curled up for pretty much a day and a half.. but its dark now and hes moving about and he was just fed today.

After Indy feeds she always slithers around her tank for a good 10 minutes or so(tastes/smells everything, rubs up against every side of the tank) before retiring to her box for a few days.

Just wondering if you could clear up that statement? :) It looks as if you're saying you are feeding a yearling snake just two pinkies a week. I'm sure that's not the case.

As for the original poster, you can always try a larger pink next time, or two small pinks to see how it goes. The rule is, I believe, to have the food be no more than 1.5 times the width of the snake at the widest point. Either way be sure to leave him be for a couple of days even though he seems active right now. Good luck!

Er...what should be the case?

yes i know not to handle.. even though he was active last night. And he wasn't active right after eating, he went straight to his box and stayed there till it got dark, then he came out as usual and was moving around.. this morning hes sleeping in his box again.

If your snake is staying active right after feeding and there's no lump visible, I'd switch to two pinkies and then in a couple of weeks, go to one fuzzy. Once on fuzzies, I usually go to 7 day feed schedule.

If your snake is a year old and you're just now feeding two pinkies then he's probably small and underfed. By a year they should easily be able to eat a fuzzy.

Half of my yearlings are on rat pups (about the size of a very small adult mouse) and rat fuzzies (about the size of a hopper). DinoNeill, if your snake has been fed 2 pinks a week and is a year old, chances are she cannot handle going to hoppers quite yet, but I would definitely switch her to fuzzies. Remember: general rule of thumb is up to 1.5X the size of the snake.

Asheleynicole, I would agree with Meg. At about 15 inches, I would probably move him up to 2 small pinks. Watch him to see how he handles it though. If he seems to be having problems, then downgrade back to one pink and try again at a later time. Baby corns are kind of piggy, and will probably try to eat an entire bag of pinks if given the chance. Remember that corns are opportunistic eaters. ;) Any opportunity, any time, any where... for the most part, they are always game.

Ack! I don't want an anorexic snake! She seems to be growing fine (sheds every month and half or so). The breeder who gave her to us last January said she was born the previous summer. I do plan to switch to fuzzies and currently the pinkies do leave a noticable lump.

After giving my snake 1 pinky, he was active the next day, and out prowling around every single night. So I decided to switch to 2 pinkies. The snake is 13 or 14 inches. He gulped them both down, then hid for a week straight (so far). He still hasn't come out except to peek out a couple of times. I decided that it's probably not healthy and I won't be doing that again any time soon.

Anyway, be careful because upping it to 2 pinkies can have big effects on your snake, IME.

I know how you guys have been saying to first try feeding your cornsnake 2 pinkies before going to a fuzzy, but I have had my corn fo 2 months and he is nearing 18 in., and somebody told me that I should just go right to a fuzzie because that if I tried to feed a corn again while it had already was digesting one item of food it would be very iratible and would not be good for thhe snake, just wondering what you guys think. Thanks

Dino Neil- as long as you're feeding your snakes they won't be anorexic. I have a little girl that's almost a year old, and another one that I think is about two (when I bought her I stupidly asked for gender but not age ::headsmack::) anyway, it occoured to me about a month ago that while they were shedding, they weren't really as big as they were when I got them, girth wise. It then dawned on me that they probably needed more food. They're back to being the right sort of thickness after about three feedings of two each of their sizes of prey, so don't worry about your snake being anorexic :)

She might have just been a late starter when it came to eating or something. If she's eating regularly now and is putting on weight and growing then I wouldn't worry about it. How often are you feeding her?

p.s. If the pinkies are still leaving a lump, assuming your snake isn't having any problems taking two, then just leave it on two pinkies for a few feedings, pinkies were still leaving a light lump in my yearling (it's what I was told to feed her in June) and now two are starting to be less noticable, so it won't take that long for your snake to fatten up a bit. I don't know how often you're feeding with two pinkies, but if it's more often than once a week I would switch to once a week so as not to over do it in the transition.

well i am going to up it to two pinkies and see how he does. then as he grows it will go up to a fuzzy when he's big enough. I don't think i will ever use rats.. its such a controversial subject ive heard both sides, so i will stick to mice pinkies.. fuzzies.. hoppers.. etc.
