Hey everyone

After seeing all the snail-related threads recently, and coupled with the fact that I've always liked them and picked them up, I decided to get one of my own. It's a regular old garden (that I just saw on my wall) snail (don't know the particular subspecies, maybe you guys can help me out. It looks a bit like a white-lipped snail to me, but I'm not sure.) From it's size I'm guessing that it's not fully grown, and it can comfortably fit in a 3L RUB. As you can see from the pictures I've given him (decided to call it a him from now on, even though they're hermaphrodites, LOL) some apple and some cucumber for the time being, and he's living on a thick layer of sphagnum moss. Any tips/advice?

Anyway, thanks for looking, and enjoy:

Thank you both :)

Strawberry, I assume the cuttlefish is for calcium for his shell? Well I'm gonna sprinkle a little calcium on his vegetables twice a week to make up for that.

Hrm, my advice (just from reading previous threads, not actual experience) is to get him a playmate! Although you'll have to work harder to collect eggs they do better in pairs. Plus you'll surely want another!

He's so cute, I wish I could have a few, but alas. :awcrap:

What a gorgeous wee snail :) My "rescued" common snaily has been in my care for almost 8 months now and doing soooo well :)

You really do need to provide cuttlefish. You would be AMAZED at how much they comp through it, and theres no such thing as too much calcium. Sprinkling calcium is good too, but you really should get the cuttle.

Try not to treat him to too much sugary fruit. My albinos got a taste for strawberries, they wouldn't touch their greens for ages afterwards.

You should go a snail huntin'. Your wee lad needs a pal :)

After it has been eating apple etc for about 3 weeks, change it's diet over to carrot...When you see the snails waste turn orange/red you know it's system has passed out any poisons it might have ingested when it was 'wild'. Then you can go back to apple to gut load it.....
Beautiful with garlic butter..:eatsmiley:grin01::rolleyes:

Welcome to the world of snail-keeping! :) Why not pick up a couple of CB giant Africans? They are cheap as chips and there are always hundreds looking for good homes - often free. There are even snail adoption agencies dotted about. :)

If you're keeping this little guy, get him a friend or two - snails do best when they're not kept alone. Remember to keep his humidity up. Try not to offer nothing but fruit - lettuce is good, but never iceberg.

If you do come across any though, it's only like £1 for a massive piece and they sit on it for hours

Just for interest's sake - did you know that they do this because they are actually absorbing calcium through the foot? Snails absorb through their skins and this is actually useful for adminsitering medicinal solutions or extra calcium to them. :)

I got Poppy a pal, Alex. They still seem to hide a lot though, all the veg "lots" is gone in the morning so I guess they come out through the night together..
And I made a video and left the room today, and I caught them snuggling into each other on the tape and after I turned the camera off they looked like they kissed lol, not sure if it's normal for snails to do this, but it was sweet :)
