Mites on new bought corns from petco

Hi, I am newbie to this forum and I would like an advice.

6 days ago I bought 2 baby corn snakes from Petco. I choose them from a cage where there were 6 of them at least.

I also bought a cage, a hiding cave, heat and all that stuff that a beginner needs (from what they told me).

Today 6 days after, I noticed that both of my snakes have lots of small black creatures on them. Are they mites? The are over the shells and between them. I have never put my hands on them without to wash them first, beside that I only had them in my hand 3-4 times so I could avoid any stress. I was changing the water every 2 days. I don't know if I bought them with that creatures on them for sure, but I cannot imagine how they have that on them. I have feed them only once.

I would like your advice. They are only 12 inches long each, can you tell me what to do? Do we have any pics of mites? Do I need any treatment? I don't know what to do because they are so small :( I pressed one creature between my nails and it "pop" leaving lots of blood.

Tomorrow morning I will go to Petco to see if there are mites on that cage. But what should I do? I don't want to return the snakes to that environment.

Tomorrow should be the feeding day. Should i feed them??
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
manos

Hey polemidis,

If I bought mite infested snakes from Petco I would return them to Petco.

I guess you could use the search feature here and find out how to kill the mites. I never have had mites because I bought all my snakes from breeders who do not have mites.

Love the Fatman

Thank you, but how can I prove that I bought them with mites? I am sure that they will deny that, and I don't know for sure if this is a fact. I didn't examine them :(

Anyway. I will go and check the other snakes the had in that cage. I did a bad start :(

Thank you

I would also take them back. dont let this one thing turn you away from them!

Of course not! One thing that I learned is that next time I will READ before act.

And of course I will never go to that pet superstores. There are so many breeders online that really love what they are doing. Anyway, my 3-years old daughter loves them also, so I can't resist her desires!!! (who can???)

What is fun, is that my wife had that fear of the "bad and disgusting snakes" that now is gone! She finally admit that they are cute! hihihi

My mom had the same fear. she still is not there very biggest fan but after months of her saying she would never like it she will touch it now. so here's hoping

Are you housing them together? Is you are, for future reference, this is frowned upon and not a good idea. ESPECIALLY with younger snakes when cannibalism is much more common. It stresses the animals and can lead to them refusing food or becoming sick. It also means you cannot know which snakes regurgitates, if one does.

Anyway, I wouldn't personally return them. I'd let Petco know and chew them a new one for sure, but I'd keep the snakes just because I'd probably already be attached. I would ditch the substrate and go to paper towels for the time being and look for some threads about how to kill mites using the search bar.

What we did with our red tail boa that had mites is we got Nix which is for human head lice, mixed one tube of nix with one gallon of water, and sprayed everything down with that. It kills both the mites and their eggs. So if I were you I'd remove all bedding and wipe down the caging, any decorations, and the snakes themselves (the chemicals wont hurt them), then replace all bedding with paper towel so that if you missed any mites you will be able to see them.

today, I went to the petco and told them the situation. The guy in generall told me that I have three options a) to return the snakes and get my money back b) to take the snakes to their vet b) to take the snakes to my own vet and show them the bill and get my money back !!!

It looked like a familiar situation for them! I don't know. The a) option is not eligible as my 3 years old has attached to them (sorry, my english are not good yet, just moved in), so I searched the forum and found the Nix way. Thanks to the guy who posted that thread. I already started the treatment. Today was the feeding day, but I will postpone it after tommorrow.
Really thank you all for your time

υποδοχή στο cornsnakes.com, Είμαι χριστιανικός...hope thats right ;)...

Make sure you treat everything that was in the cage, and use newspaper or paper towels as your substrate so they'll be less hiding spaces for the mites, and you'll be able to see any stragglers...there has been some speculation over the yrs that the ink in newsprint may be beneficial in killing mites or mite eggs, but don't quote me :)

To the OP polemidis, any update on this? I just yesterday used Ivermectin spray on my snakes for mites and if that didn't work I am thinking about doing the nix treatment.

Some questions for you...
1. Did you follow the directions exactly?
2. How are your snakes now?
3. Have you seen anymore mites?
4. Have you repeated the treatement?
