Mites?

Today i got out my snow and i notice some black dots on her, and got especially alarmed when i saw one right by her eye. I am wondering if this is a mite or if it is just dirt because 1. she was burrowed in the bedding when i pulled her out and had bigger pieces of bedding on her that i kinda brushed off and 2. i changed the bedding just a week ago. if it is mites, i plan to use the NIX solution on my whole collection because they are in slightly close quarters. So, what do you guys think?????????

Do you see anything in the water that resembles pepper? Could be mites, so you may want to start treatment, just in case.

Before using the Nix, you should make sure they are mites and not just dirt. I check for mites every month. All you have to do is get a plain, white paper towel and wet it. Let your snake crawl all the way through the paper towl. If you see any black dots that are moving or turn red when you squish them with your fingernail, those are mites. If its just dirt therer will be no movement or blood :) hope that helps, its an easy way to check.

How old is your snow? Be very careful with small or young snakes with the nix solution.

my snake is an 03 so its an adult. no, there is nothing floating in the water. i guess i will start treatment just in case but on friday i have to use her for a presentation so i may start on sunday..

In my experience mites are easy to see...once you know what to look for. Watch the black dots for a minute...if they're moving, they're mites. Once you spot them you can usually find them in the water bowl, on the substrate and walls of the cage. Let your snake crawl through your hands, then check your hands for moving spots...the wet paper towel is a good idea too. Being that I'm a coin dealer I have magnifiers and jewelers loupes everywhere...these come in handy too.
Good luck!
Nick
