Most horrifying picture i have seen to date.

You know what is really sad and sick isn't necessarily the people who have these disorders and problems, but the public's fascination with it. It is "news" that sells, and the majority of the public seems to luv this kinda of crap. Not just in the States either, but all across the world. And the original post is just sad. What's the point? We have become a society that likes to feel better when we see others who are suffering, especially those who are rich and famous.

I'll agree with the first point; at least in the US, we're a society of gawkers. I'll never understand the public's fascination with celebrities/media whores.

But, it's not as if schadenfreude is a new concept.

Hmmmm, I don't think tricksterpup was making fun, nor slamming her, "this is one scary and sad photo." is neither.

As to her "problems". Give me a break. The media's fault? Sorry, last I checked, each individual person is responsible for their individual choices. Regardless of the pressures, it still comes down to a choice.

Quite frankly I'm sick and tired of the "pass the blame to someone else" society that is developing. Own your problems and find your solutions. :shrugs:

I certainly think the circumstances of life weigh on our decisions, that certainly doesn't excuse the choices people make, but given the same set of circumstances, I believe anyone of us could end up in the same place. But as far as "own your problems and find your solutions", I agree, but what is worse is that "we" get enjoyment out of others misery.

I disagree a little with you Drizz. I'm not saying all of us should just blame society and stay at home feeling sorry for ourselves and waiting for the welfare check. If we have a problem we should try to fix it ourselves. But there are problems you can't fix by yourself. I think eating disorders are part of a deeper seated mental problem and people are ashamed to seek help, or find it unnecessary because after all you can't be too rich or too thin so what is wrong with starving yourself? I hold to my belief that society's ideal of a sports illustrated swimsuit model is unattainable for most women and does more damage than good. Would you tell a manic depressive or a schizophrenic, 'Own your problem and find your solution?' These girls who have eating disorders need help. I have to admit I laughed at the hopper comment though.

"We", meaning me and the turd in my pocket, don't get any satisfaction or enjoyment out of others' misery. :shrugs: I can state that "we" don't care about any misery that celebrities may be experiencing. Their "problems" pale in comparison to my daily struggles with keeping my family healthy and safe.

My niece went through that. She reached a point where no matter what anyone else told her, or how horribly thin she was in reality, when she looked in the mirror she still saw a "fat girl" (in fact, my niece never was fat. She actually had a figure at 14 that any 20 or 30 something would kill for). Eventually enough counseling made her realize that she really is beautiful and that it's okay to not look like a pencil. It didn't help that she was at an all girls boarding school at the time this started.

Ah, but you're straying off course:
A. I never said fix it yourself, I said find your solution.
B. "Shame" and "unnecessary" and "societies opinions/pressure" do not remove the option of choice.

Yes, which is why I said disagreed with you a little.. not disagreed completely. ;) Sorry to stray off topic, but since I already have/did, I am going to say I think the standard for men is just as unfair. Just like there's girls starving themselves to try to look thin enough, there's boys trying steroids to try for a washboard ab and ripped pecs or whatever it's called.

I asked for a washboard for Christmas. Didn't get it. Nobody can live up to the standards we set for ourselves. And the people that do are so abscessed with their appearance that it becomes an illness. It isn't good to completely let go but you have got to find a happy medium somewhere. I'm a happy XXXL.

I've got Six-Pack abs myself... they're just in well insulated packaging.

Lol I'd rather have a keg than a 6 pack ;)

I'm 5'7 and weighed 160 last time I went to a doctor, I absolutely refuse to have a scale in the house. (Except the snake's one) So I don't think I've completely let myself go but I'm no hourglass either. I'm more obsessed with keeping my snakes fit than myself.

Oh and let's not forget that this isn't entirely a woman's problem. I used to date a wrestler and he was anorexic because of trying to make the proper weight class. Then I started not eating at lunch because i felt self conscious because i was eating and he wasn't...every day. When i realized how easily he had affected me I told him I couldn't date him anymore if he continued to starve himself for a sport. He stopped wrestling, which probably saved him health problems later.

Just my experience..my only experience with anorexia has been through a man.

This is a very interesting topic BTW.

Not in the least.

I second. I find that look quite UNattractive. I'd spend all my time around her saying, "can I fix you a sandwich?" Women with proportion and curves where curves belong and lumps where lumps belong are far more attractive to me.

If I wanted to date a fence post, I'd have spent more time at the hardware store chatting them up when I was single.

True, but it's also true that those afflicted may believe their "choices" to be non-existent and/or limited. The addictive person oft times thinks they've painted themselves into a corner.

I'm going to go have a smoke now. ;)

I have hung onto a pair of jeans that don't fit me anymore for quite a while. This thread just may be the inspiration I need to throw them in the goodwill box for once and for all.

Absolutely!

Wife (accidentally slipping on a pair of my jeans): What the hey [edited for audience]? These legs are too long!
Wife, realization slowly gaining a foothold: ... oh [edited yet again]! These are YOURS! And they nearly fit! [mucho editing]
Me: Is someone at the door? I better go check! [hasty exit]
