My husband and I are moving to Columbus, OH on Monday. What is the best way to move our crew with the least amount of stress. I fed everyone 3 days ago, so they are good until a few days after we get there. It is a 9 hour drive from Jersey--Yikes.
 
I think do whatever you have to do to not let them get hot. So if you are going to be stopping and eating restaurant meals, you have to have the snakes in bags so you can bring them into the restaurant with you. And you have to think about sun shining in the windows of the car and overheating them even when you are driving. What are they in?

Nanci- they are in 20 gallon tanks right now, but I use a picnic basket to transport them. They have their own pillow cases. We are driving straight through, with a few stops as possible. We are also transporting cats and fish, so the A/C will always be on. So you think the pillow cases are the way to go?
 
I moved 8 snakes from Chicago to Seattle in a car and I had 0 problems. But I did leave them with empty stomaches, the adults eat every 2 weeks so they were nice and empty and the yearlings I held back the food for a week before I left. I put them in the smallest tubs I could find and packed them loosely in a few cardboard boxes out of direct sunlight. As long as they are well protected from the sun (and definately pay attention to the car temps), and you'll be fine. I packed them without water but thanks to the loose pack it was simple for me to get at them and give them a drink. I would do that at extended stops...meals, naps whatever.

I'd put the pillowcases in something escape proof. Last week I took Jake to the vet. I put him in a pillowcase, and he instantly found a TINY hole in a corner that I wouldn't have seen, and burst out, only got stuck and I couldn't get it to rip any further, so he just had to suck it up to get out. Then I put him in another pillowcase, inspected this time, and put him in Maizey's feeding tub, and snapped the lid shut. So halfway to the vet, I glance over at him and he has opened the lid and is halfway out of the bin, still in the pillowcase!

It's amazing what they can get through. I put sliding doors on the 10 gal tank for Danu and fed her. She had this huge belly with two pinkies in it. There is a gap of less than 1/8 of an inch. Yep. Right. You guess, she's on walk-about.

My problem is that if I couldn't find a 5 lb. iguana in the house, how am I going to find a 10 gram white snake?

Just have to wait and see.

Maybe traveling with your snakes in a large cooler with one of those ice blue freezer thingies in will help your snakes stay cool and in one place.

If you do use a cooler pack like that, be sure it is well insulated and that there is a barrier of some sorts between the cooler pack and the snakes. You don't want them curling up right next to it...

Other then that, the pillow cases as suggested - for adults, sub-adults, and yearlings. If you have hatchlings you can pack them in a deli cup with enough aspen/sani-chips to burrow in and act as a cushion against the usual bumps and shifts of traveling by car.

That is my plan then, pillow cases. Thank you all so much. The cats and fish have done this moving thing a few times, This is my 1st time moving the snakes. I just want to make their move least stressful as possible. They all ate 3 days ago, so by Monday we will be good. They are not due to eat again until the 3rd. Their 1st Birthdays are also coming up too!!! Slinky will be one on August 5th and Cornelia will be one on August 7th. Sniff...Sniff....they grow up so fast. lol!!!!

Nanci -I laughed out loud when I read the bit with your snake escaping from the tub still in the pillow case.

Someone else in the General Chit-chat page has got a snake on a "walk-about"---not to worry she will show up. I have a friend whose corn got out and he was in her daughters dresser drawer just chillin. I hope you find her..Good Luck

One way to beat the heat is to plan the timing of your trip. Last year my GF and I had to transport 100+ snakes in the back of a Uhaul truck in the August heat from N. California to S. California. The trip was about 9 hours so we just planned our trip to leave around 10PM and arrive in the early morning. It worked like a charm. I didn't have the option of taking 100+ snakes into a restraunt to eat. :grin01: Would have been cool though. If you do it this way you don't have to worry about the sun coming through the windows either.
 
VinnyJ-Thats sounds like a great idea, but since we only have the 3 snakes, I think we will be ok. I am going to put them on my floor boards in my car and make sure that they are not in direct sun. Also it's 10pm here now and it's already an hour past the usual time I go to bed. I am not an evening person. I get up early-by choice. Yes..yes I am one of those morning people. I am almost 33 years old and 10 pm is late for me.
On a lighter note..I think it would have been a real trip to walk into a restaurant in the middle of the night with 100 snakes. "What?? They wanted the midnight special..." lol!!!!!!
 
Thanks, OH is new for me. My husband went to OSU!! We are huge Buckeye fans--Go Bucks!! I am planning on going to some of the Reptile shows as soon as I can. It's dangerous though--I have never left empty handed. lol!!!!!

Glad I found this thread...I was about to make the exact same thing. Only I'm moving from Chicago to San Antonio. :wavey:

And searching for "moving" doesnt help much. :rolleyes:
 
Ok here goes, I just made a move 4 weeks ago with three snakes over 36 hours (don't ask).
This is how I did it, each snake was placed in a pillow case and tied shut, then each snake was placed inside their feeding box and taped shut. (my wife is paranoid about snake security) then we put the snakes inside a cooler with a thermostat probe and taped the digital read out on the outside of the cooler. We opened boxes every 4 hours for air exchange and checked the temps. Weather outside was 85-90 and humid, temp in cooler never exceeded 80 degrees and most of the time was between 72-75.
They were the last packed items and the first unpacked items. All are well and were only a little pissed when they came out of the bags. The cooler really kept the temps constant even setting in a hot car and with the probe in there we never had to open them in a hot area to check the temps. We already had all the stuff and now I have an extra fishing cooler because my wife refuses to use it. LOL
 
I can do that!! I have a cooler that we are not going to be using. They can all go in their pillow cases and in their feeding buckets. I can use one of their temp probes from their tanks to monitor temps. We are not leaving until 9am to avoid rush hour outside of Philadelphia ( not that traffic here is really bad). We have to break down our fish tanks that morning, and it's a little time consuming so we are getting a later start. Thank you for all of the helpful information, I was just concerned about keeping their travel as stress free as possible.

Well, I know how she got out but her potential mate, Eluyanka, went on walkabout sometime Monday and I have no idea how he got out. Not only did he get out sometime between Noon and 8 PM but he left his shed in a different tank. It is really bumming me out but I look at it this way: They will either come back or we won't have to worry about mice around the house.
