Moving my 10 year old Corn Snake

Ok so I'm moving from Delaware to Florida in January of 08. I have no clue how to move my 10 year old Corn snake. I've tried looking tips up online and have found nothing. Can anyone help me not traumatize my poor snake on a two day move?

I'd probably put him in a pillowcase in his feeding bin, so he dosn't get squashed by accident, but you can still bring him in the pillowcase into restaurants so he doesn't get cold in the car.

Im going to be moving too, not that far and not that soon though. I know I was planning on moving my snakes in containers and using my car to do it cause its a quick ride over the bridge. Im moving my animals myself and leaving everything else for the moving company.

Are you putting him into the back of a moving truck? If you are Id put him in some sort of plastic container, not glass tanks. Try and limit how much hes bumped around, and depending on how cold it is in Delaware and how long he'll be in those low temps, maybe you can get some heat packs too.

You should probably allow him to settle back down after the move too before feeding him.

Do you think a snake that old will be able to handle a move like that in that cold of weather. I've had some real reservations about bringing him with me. I would just die if anything happend to him.

I was thinking about keeping him in his feeding tank with me in the front of the truck where the heat is but worried I won't be able to keep him hydrated enough and he gets rather fussy when he's in his feeding cage and doesn't get fed.

Thanks for the Welcome I'm sure my snake will like the warmer weather.

My king snake drove with me from Grand Forks, ND to New Orleans, LA in just a plastic critter cage. I made sure to keep him from temperature extremes, but other than that, no special treatment. The drive was 4 days plus a 2 day layover to visit my brother before finally getting home.

One thing to consider... move him with an empty stomach. :grin01:

My only I'm trying to figure out is how to keep water available without having to stick my hands in the cage every time we stop. Like I said he can be rather fussy in his feeding cage if he's not fed. It's almost like he knows that the smaller cage means food. LOL

If you stop for the night you can offer him water- but I wouldn't really worry about it. Think of how long they go without drinking when they are blue!

Ah yes very true. I'm thinking since it's about a 20 hour drive to where I'm going my boyfriend and I can drive in shifts so that way there is no stopping . I just want to make this move as smooth and as quick for my snake as possible. Thank you for all your help.

if you're worried about him getting impatient in his feeding cage, you could always get him a different smaller cage. Even if it's the same size at least it won't smell like mice, himself, etc.

And besides, if you go with Nanci's idea and keep him in a pillowcase inside the feeding cage, it won't be a normal visit to the smaller tank anyway....unless you normally feed him in a pillowcase...

LOL yeah no I don't usually feed him in a pillow case. Maybe I will buy him a need smaller cage that might work. Thanks for all your help.:spinner:

When I moved my hatchling was still new to me and a young snake. I kept him in his 10gallon tank without any real modifications. I kept a close eye on the thermometer and kept a blanket to throw over the top of the cage. Just make sure to keep the temp right for him. One thing I did was get a A/c Inverter (Which plugs into a cig lighter and gives you a normal power outlet. So I could plug a uth in that way I didn't have to keep the car uncomfortably warm the entire drive as that might put you guys to sleep especially on a long drive.

I truly wish I didn't have to use a smaller tank but, I don't think a 30 gallon tank will fit in the cab of the truck very comfortably LOL. Thank you for the insite though maybe I'll see if I still have my 10 gallon tank if I do I might use that instead.

your snake can make the trip just fine if you don't let it to near the heat vent. but one problem you may have is the state laws you cross through. i'm not sure of your route, but some states is a big no no. i helped a friend a few years ago move his snakes and gators south and we had to go way out of the way due to the laws and heavy fines/confiscation. to much to risk. good luck.

Wow I had no idea that there were laws about that. Thanks for the heads up. Also how did your friend find out what states you couldn't go thru?

he used to live in one of the states(tenn. no gators). a guy a one of the herp shows was talking to him about some of ohio's laws on certain lengths having to have permits, so he (my friend) called wildlife in ohio. don't know all the details just knew to avoid it.

Cool thanks for the heads up.
