musking

What is musking ? I don't think Dayoh has ever done that and i have had him over a year now. His poo stinks but thats all i have ever noticed smelling.

When some snakes get nervous they emit (or sometimes even squirt!) a foul smelling...goo (for lack of a better word) from their vent. Sometimes they like to writhe around in it, and rub it all over themselves and their attacker as a deterent to eating them. Its a mildly unpleasant experience, but nothing too awful. Just try picking up any garter snake, and I'm sure you'll get the full effect. :)

None of my corns have ever done that (and I think most corns don't), but I know some people's do. Hope that helps!

Well im happy Dayoh is secure enough to not stink me up. If its as bad as their poo that would really be nasty. That is one foul smell

Kingsnakes are prone to doing that. Since it's smelly and wet, make sure the snake is pointed away from you when you pick it up!

Nice to know about Kings I was planning on possibly getting one this weekend. Haven't made up my mind between a king another corn or a ball.

I love my kings as much as my corns, rats, etc. Don't let potential musking keep you from getting a king. Of the five kings we have, two have never done it, two have only done it once or twice and one does it almost every time (but she's still a baby). Keep a paper towel on hand to wipe your hands, then wash your hands. It's kind of fishy smelling, I think, but better smelling than a fresh deposit the cat box if you ask me. We keep hand sanitizer in the snake room, too, for a quick clean.

I like scarlets, what type do have?

Never mind i read your other post... I would love to see pics of your other snakes if you want to email them to me. This is corn only so no king pics.

We have one desert phase Cali, a lav albino Cali (the infamous musker), a Ruthven's (also called Queretaro), a Mex black and a red blotched Goin's.

Email me for more info and pics, so we don't get kicked off the corn forum! LOL ;)

My female butter mot did it the only time I tried to give her a bath. (No bath jokes Cav! LOL) And woohoo did it stink! Musk is a good description for what it smells like.

Eeeew....I think Legoless did that to me once! Sneaky-snake! He may have been mildly po'd that the kitty was nearby. That would figure. Snugs (kitty) tends to want to hop down from his perch on the back of the sofa while I've got Legoless in my hands. He just can't stand the competition. And yes...Legoless has a locking viv with a kitty-proof top. Normally, Snugs doesn't give a whit about Legoless.

my amel did it on me before, it was wet and had like a yellowish color to it. he was housed with a snow corn a tat bigger than him at the pet shop so he was always nervous.

I have four Kingsnakes and only one had the habit of musking. I have chronic sinus problems, and I didn't smell a thing. My son is very sensitive to odors and he doesn't smell anything either. As time goes on "Sen Sen" :devil01: has lost this habit. His personality flaw is striking. He strikes at everything, regardless of size. I am hoping to get him accustomed to handling as he matures so this doesn't become a habit. Sure it's real cute when they're little. Not so cute when they have grown up.

Im so proud of myself. Today when I was handling Trinity I noticed her tail was up a bit and i predicted that she would poo...I was right :crazy02:

Congrats Bigpops, that is a major acheivement. My son has become expert at telling when his corn is going to poop, ever since she deposited the biggest amount all over his new trousers!!! I'm just glad he was holding her and not me LOL. She only seems to poop when he gets her out, and he always catches it in toilet roll and it goes down the loo. Good trick if you can learn it. :wavey:

Mine've taken to pooing on me too... I've started to be able to tell when it'll happen and move it away from my clothing! :eek1:

My little psycho-B**** (real name Tepin) has a tendency to musk. She also tail rattles, bites and thinks she's a miniature Cobra. Nasty temperament! I'm hoping as she gets older, she'll improve. Yesterday when I fed her, she tail rattled and struck at the second fuzzy I gave her, and then slithered around her feeder box rattling at it until she figured out it was food. Dumb little thing!!

I've been pooped on a couple of times...you can often see it coming if you pay attention. They lift their tail (arch their back) a bit and the muscles on either side of their vent pulsate and then out comes the poop!

I've only been musked on once and it was at a show...it got all over my jeans and a little on my sleeve and I had to put up with it for another 4 hours (yes I did try to clean it up but didn't do a great job!)

Here's what Seltzer did to me a few months ago...just happened to have my camera handy!

Of the 4 corns that we have, only 1 has ever pooped on me. It was our first and we didn't know how to recognize it was about to happen.

Our latest, a normal, has a musking habit. He will musk on anyone who picks him up. When we first got him he would get into striking position and tail rattle and musk. He never did strike, just threatened to. Now he only musks so we are getting closer to a calm snake.
