my 1st snake. can nayone ID pls?

I'm intrigued as to how you caught this snake? How did you pick it up? What possessed you to try and handle it, if you didn't know what it was? Basically give us the whole story, I'm really interested.
You do know where you live there are some real handy snakes just waiting to send you to the great Viv in the sky.(or where ever ones religion send souls)

Yeah, I don't know, when I was a kid, we were taught NEVER to pick up any wild snake, "dead" or alive. Even now, I have to be pretty darn sure of what something is before I just pick it up! Too many really scary snakes in South Africa! lol

I live in Wales, we are teaching our kids "if you see any snakes grab them and bring them home"
Seriously though, there is only one snake with venom in the U.K. And it's only a mild venom, I don't think it's killed anyone for years and before that it was even more years since anyone died. You have to be old, ill, or really young. And although they are common no one ever sees them. They only get to about 18 inches. Other than that we have two little constrictors max size about 4 ft.
I'd love to live somewhere there was a lot more snakes, but then I think maybe I'm lucky that nothing lives here that can really harm you. Except the leopards up in the woods, but thats a different story.(I don't believe they are about, because I ain't seen one)

Hehehe With things like:

*Black Mambas
*Green Mambas
*Puff Adders
*Mozambique Spitting cobras
*Egyptian (Snouted) Cobras
*Cape Cobras
*Tree snakes (Boomslang) - though these don't cause many deaths.
*Night Adders
*Vine/Bird snakes
etc etc, you do not want your kids picking up snakes here! lol

I've seen most of these up close and personal (sometimes a little too close)! lol Even in residential areas! :santa:

Plus you have lions elephants sharks etc etc. It's any wonder you can rest easy when the kids are out playing,or do you have kiddie armour for them

Hehehe I am going to assume you were joking about lions and elephants wondering around! lmao :D (You won't believe how many people think we live in mudhuts in the bush! lol)

Sharks are another story...personally, I am very nervous of swimming in the sea here! lol

Give the guy a break! I catch snakes and then ID all the time! Obviously, I know all the venomous snakes native to my area. When I was a kid (I grew up where a rattlesnake would be quite a rarity, although I could have ID'd it and stayed away) I was always out catching stuff, bringing it home, IDing it, and then releasing back where I got it. In those days, there was no Internet to make it easy- I had to page through reptile books! Down here, I've caught and then ID'd a normal corn, baby black racer, yellow rat, penninsula ribbon snake, short tailed snake, coral snake, (I knew it could potentially be a coral, I just couldn't remember the saying in my excitement!!) rough green snake, and a black rat.

But I agree- for a first snake, I would buy a healthy snake with known care from a pet store or breeder.

Yes I was Joshing you with the lion comments. But you still have enough to contend with, maybe Australia has the edge, but it's too close to call.
