How do snakes breathe while they are eating?

I should her a diagram of a snakes internal organs and she's been watching our snakes while they eat. She asked us this question, and I honestly don't know how to answer her.

Good question! Snakes have a little hole called a glottis that is in their lower mouth. It acts as a snorkel while they are eating. So they can breath and eat at the same time.
Hope that helps!
Terri

that's very interesting! i'll have to find a picture and explain it to her. It is truly amazing to watch a snake eat, but i'm so glad we don't have to swallow our meals whole!
