once you get locked into a serious snake collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.

Nicole,

You could always suggest a Hog Island Boa to your boyfriend. They're very similar in looks and care to RTB's.

The main difference is size - full blooded Hog's will typically get no larger than 6', with preferred size to be 4'-5'. Adults are easily handled by a single person, and the couple I've handled have been absolute sweethearts.

I was going to suggest one too! I have one, and he's nice but unfortunately it took me awhile to figure out that he preferred live feeding, so he went without eating for a while but now he's back on track. If your boyfriend were to get one, I'm not saying that it would prefer live as well but it's something to think about if it were to become necessary.

As you can see, he looks almost identical to a red tail boa.

How active are they? Temp ranges?

Quite active - the yearlings that my buddy has are extremely curious and intelligent little guys. They're always out and about in their tank. The adult female at the last show I went to was extremely chilled out - she literally slithered onto my shoulders and seemed perfectly content to ride around for hours if need be.

As for temp ranges, they're a tropical snake, so an ambient temperature of mid to high 80's with a basking area of 90-92 will work just fine.

Ok, even if he does not get one I think I know what my second snake will be. The more I read on the Hogs the more I want one.

By the way, Jason that snake looks amazing!

I wasn't kidding when I said I don't handle my Amazon Tree Boas. There are a few that I can coax into letting me getting sheds out and cleaning cages, but for the most part they're not touched. Not to mention they musk. A lot. And it stinks. Bad.

If he wants a good looking, semi-arboreal - how about an Jungle Carpet Python?
Care is similar, if not a bit easier, and they're much more handleable.

Nicole,
Another option would be a Brazilian Rainbow Boa - they're a tad harder to take care of due to humidity requirements, but they're a larger snake that typically doesn't get too much larger than 5-6'.

If this were a poll, I'd for for BRBs.
Just show him this picture

If someone is will to do the research and make sure they have suitable housing, Rainbow Boas are not very hard to look after. Just keep them humid and give them a nice hide and they happy. The only downside is other than the times you take them out you will never see them. I don't know why I give them a big tub to move around when they never come out of their hides.

Actually they are cool snakes. I know you want a Hogg Island.

Isaac, is your ATB an import or U.S. CBB? Most of the ATB's I've handled that are actually handleable are CBB. Kathy Weeks had a litter and handled all of them from a young age. All are quite good. The only nasty ATB I've been around was an import at the petstore. He'd go right for your face. I can do whatever I want with my ATB. You can't move fast around him or he'll mock strike at stuff, but for regular handling he's fine. He's never musked either. FWIW....BRB would be my choice! That's next on my list of wannas!

I've got a few of the snakes mentioned in the posts.
northern pine snakes are great, loud an proud and a good size
Costa Rican boas, like a boa but 5-6ft , nice and compact
carpet python Irian Jaya again about 6ft and a friendly arboreal
I couldn't say which is the best as it's horses for courses,(all snakes are cool) Get your boyfriend to get up-close and personal with a variety of snakes as they tend to be different in books as opposed to real life(and they look much better in real life)

I sure couldn't pick from all the alternatives that have been suggested! If space was no concern...I think Carpet Pythons are gorgeous. I LOVE big bull/fox/gopher snakes. Hogg Island- how cool! Actually, I think I'd go for a bull/fox/gopher.

ATB can be nippy. But why should space be an issue West Papuan Carpets are great and only get max 6 feet.

Six feet is big to me!! My biggest snake is 49" and he seems huge. Not like scared-of huge, but like OMG I don't want him to be in too small of an enclosure huge.

-dies- Meg! I think you and my boyfriend have something going on. He was again looking at you site and saw that Acatl was having a clutch and now he is thinking about one of those. Of course he is not sure about this and it's still up in the air but hey at least we are on some sort of track. Guys are crazy.

I still want a Hog though and of course he still does not know if he wants one or not.

So should I just have him sent up a tank that could work for almost any snake and then just go from there?

You're welcome to e-mail me about Acatl's clutch. You can't go wrong with a nice cornsnake and having these locality animals with their history..........

It would be easyer if he got a corn, I'll give him your email. When do you think that clutch would be ready to be shipped? Also how do you feel about pick ups? There is a slight chance I'll be in SC this summer I may be able to stop by and pick mine and if he wants one his also. If thats ok. I'm not sure if an 8/9 hour car ride is better or worse then a shipping ride.

Pickups are perfectly fine. If they eat the next couple of meals, they'll be ready pretty quick. All have eaten a meal without a hitch. I'll be feeding again in a day or two.
