My Christmas Project For The Horse Lovers

Pal-O-Mine

New member
A year ago I noticed that one of my neighbors had a children's plastic toy riding horse on a metal frame at the end of their driveway with a big sign reading "Free". The paint job was pretty cheap. You could tell the manufacturer was taking a pretty pathetic stab at trying to do a leopard appaloosa without really knowing what that was.

So I took it home and figured I would eventually re-paint it and make it into a carousel horse. Well its taken the better part of a year to get around to it but I finally did it. And just in time for Christmas! It still needs its hooves painted silver, drainage holes drilled into it and a pole fitted to it but the paint job is pretty much done. ( No, I was not going for a realistic look! Just a better paint job than the original.)

So here's pics of its metamorphasis. Unfortuneately, I didn't take pics of the original paint job. If I had known it was gonna turn out half this good, I would have!

That looks REALLY nice! I love the combination of the gold horse and the green on the saddle. Did you use canned paint, airbrushes or paintbrushes to accomplish your masterpiece?

BTW--Palomino is my favorite horse color :).

The base coat was just canned metallic gold spray paint from the local hardware store. The rest was craft paint. Then I sprayed it in 2-3 coats of clear fixative to protect it from the weather.

It came out better than I expected! AND it matches our 3 blonde ponies. Hmmmm. Maybe I should do it again. I'm always seeing these horses in junkyards and flea markets.

I wanna put this next to the farm sign at the end of our driveway but I'm also scared to. We have some local teens around here who go hot-rodding on their ATV's and they have a penchant to destroy mailboxes. If they took a baseball bat to this pony after I put all this work into it, I'd be sick!
