Nothing too creative or spectacular, but I thought I'd share my DIY hides on here. Little Scout was just too small for most of the commercial hides, so I had to be resourceful. One is made from a yogurt tub, and the other from a plastic bowl... they each cost around $0.50 (including the yogurt), and were made with a cheap soldering gun & scissors. He loves them, especially the yogurt tub! :)

The hole looks a bit rough, but is actually quite smooth...

You can see I also use shredded newspaper & mail as bedding - works great and doesn't cost a thing!

Oh, but the bedding in the first picture is Carefresh... just using the leftovers from my mice, since I didn't have any shredded paper on hand.
 
The hides are great. I use all different things as hides. Paper Towel tubes, small boxes, bowls, old tupperware, etc. I would say that as long as they ar not sharp or toxic, just about anything could be used.

As far as the care fresh goes. I will use it during the winter months on my snakes. I sometimes use aspen, but I'm not a big fan of shavings or chip substrate. I also use newspaper (shredded or not) and paper towel. It's not very eye appealing, but it all works.

Thanks! I gave Scout a toilet paper roll at first, but it got soggy pretty quick (he likes to splash his water sometimes). And I love the Carefresh for rodents, especially since I'm allergic to most other beddings... but I agree that newspaper & paper towels are preferred. I use paper towels for my smaller Ball Pythons, and un-shredded newspaper sheets for the larger BPs - they're just soooooo easy to clean, huh?

Meant to say that while I like Carefresh for rodents, newspaper & paper towels are preferred for reptiles... :cool:
 
Love it! I do much the same with my mom's cottage cheese tubs, only for my bigger snakes... She likes to get Costco-sized tubs, lol.

My favorite kind of hide (for hatchlings) is one of those little plastic "nibble bowls" from Petsmart's "small animal" section with a hole cut in the side. They make good water dishes, and even better hides! I was actually thinking about doing a little "mini DIY" on those... I think I will, as soon as I can get another batch of fresh dishes to work on. =)
 
Good ideas above! It's so funny, I've noticed that now I am always looking for good DIY hides... I'll be at the grocery store thinking "that deli cup would make a good hide," LOL. :D

I do the same thing!!! And I apparently have my mom doing it, too... Lol!!! We do some of our monthly grocery shopping at a restaurant supply-type store, and she pointed out a bulk package of those plastic sugar packet caddies while we were there this month and asked if they would make good hides for the babies... xD
 
I had a snake once that had a uber favorite hiding spot.
It was an orange juice carton.
He was always in there, and only came out to eat.
My friend started calling him O.J., and it kinda stuck.
It was really cool come feedin time because he would feel me open the cage, and would just pop his head out of the hole in the carton, and wait for me to "tong" the pink over to him.
He would then grab it, and gently retract into the container, like a power antenna going down.
Funny as all get out.
 
Some of my snakes favorite hides are made out of sour cream containers. They are cylindrical in shape and I cut them in half lengthwise...so that they almost look like half logs, but have backs on them (only 1 side open). My butter stripe seems to prefer this hide along with toilet paper rolls.
 
Looks really awesome, but just noticed the temp on your thermostat. Cage a little cold or brumating? Sorry if I'm nosey, just curious
 
I am using a cardboard box that an ink cartrige came in, for Gypsy. She loves it. That reminds me, I need to check today to see if she has shed. Its about time for it...lol
 
I personally hate to clean hides after they have been pooped on. I only use things that can be thrown away. Mostly empty boxes from the kitchen. I use empty cigarette packages for baby snakes.
