alright, so my "creamsicle" corn snake has arrived. however, to me, he doesn't look very "creamsicle," although i suppose their colors change as they grow. any opinions? what did your baby creamsicles look like when they were really young?

i know everyone likes photos, so here are a few i quickly took. they're not entirely clear, i didn't want to scare my snake too much by handling him and shoving a big scary flash in his face!

i took these the first day i brought him home, it shows how little he is right now (by the way, any guesses at age?):

and here's a photo i took of the first pinky i gave him! i thawed it out real good, and spent awhile dangling it in front of him inside his viv, but he just didn't seem interested. so i picked him up, and held the mouse in front of him, and he just shoved it right in his mouth! and he sat there and ate the whole thing right in my hand, it was a very exciting, and amazing thing for me! (yes i know, kind of gross that i am thrilled by this, but it is a natural phenomenon! i cannot help it!):

i'm very excited on my new pet, i have lots to learn! and i'm very excited about the cornsnakes.com forums, i have already got lots of help from you people! thanks, enjoy. more pictures to come, i am a huge sucker for a "sony" moment!
 
Congratulations on your new baby! He is very cute!! (I don't know much about the various colors, so I'll leave your creamsicle question to the experts. He looks like a regular Amel to me but they change so much as they get older)......Also, make sure you don't handle your snake after he eats...it can cause stress and digestive problems, trust me...my new baby just had a regurge on his 2nd feeding and it is no fun! how long after feeding should i wait to handle the snake? i don't take him out much, i've had him out maybe 3-4 times since i got him (tuesday evening). i thought i'd give him time to settle in and kind of get used to the sounds and smells in his new surroundings.
 
You should wait at least 36 hours after feeding to handle....BUT in general when they are hatchlings and new to you, you should really try to limit handling him the first month. I know it sucks, I want to handle Monty soooo bad, but most will advise to really let them settle in. Handling can cause stress and stress can cause non feeding or regurge. After feedin him in a container you should just place the container in the viv and let him crawl out...I wouldn't pick him up after. Good luck!

he was really roaming around the cage yesterday afternoon though, so i figured he was out scavenging for food. so i waited a few more hours before trying to feed him, and like i said he wouldn't take the mouse inside the cage, but i picked him up and offered the pinky, and he took it without any hesitation whatsoever! but i will follow your advice and limit handling. i don't plan on even opening his cage unless it's to rinse out his water bowl and/or to feed. how often do you figure a snake that little needs feeding? once a week? twice a week? should i try feeding him whenever he looks like he's roaming around searching for food?

And as far as that being a Creamsicle-no. Looks like a very nice Amel. Little hard for me to tell by the pics with the lighting but looks like an Reverse Okeetee Amel. The borders are very wide and white around those saddles. That is one pretty baby!
 
I have been following the "Munson Plan" which was written by one of the moderaters I believe, Roy Munson, on this site. Everyone that uses it swears by it. It uses weight in grams for your snake, so you might get a kitchen scale to weigh your snake. (I got one from Meijer for $25) Here is the plan:

When they're on single pinks (2-3g), I feed every 4-5 days. (Snake = 4-15g)
-Double pinks (3g x 2) every 4-5 days. (Snake = 16-23g)
-Small fuzzies (5-7g) every 5-6 days. (Snake = 24-30g)
-Regular fuzzies (7-9g) every 5-6 days (Snake = 30-50g)
-Hoppers (9-12g) every 5-6 days (Snake = 51-90g)
-Weaned (14-20g) every 7 days (Snake = 91-170g)
-Adult (24-30g) every 7-x days (Snake = 170+)
-Jumbo Adults (40-50g) every 7-x days (Snake = 400g+)
 
i got it from a (semi) local breeder. he lives about an hour-ish away from me, i met him in the pet store that i work for, he comes in for lots n lots of mice all the time, and one day i wondered what exactly he was feeding all these random-sized mice to, and he told me he had 29 corn snakes! i told him i'd like a creamsicle, but i said SURPRISE ME, so i don't know precisley what type it is. although i don't much care, i will love it either way!
 
oops i pressed reply too soon. but yeah this guy is the supplier of the snakes that we get in, i had no idea until my boss was chattin it up with him one day. i only see him about once a week though cause he has to drive down to get his stuff, but usually when we get things in from him he ships it using a courier, since it only takes a little while.
 
Like I said that is one pretty Amel! And it looks very healthy too. Thats a big plus.:dancer:

(I hate seeing the little bitty corns in pet stores. Some times I wonder how many make it later. I wont even sell one that is really small.)
 
Well, "creamsicle" technically just means it's an amel that has emory and corn lineage... so if the breeder called it a creamsicle, that's what you should call it and any of its descendants, if you choose to breed! IMHO, unless the camera is changing the colors that one's not going to look like the iconic super orange-all-over creams, but will resemble more of an amel cornsnake. But they do get a lot more yellow/orange as they grow!
Looks like a very pretty baby... almost "reverse okeetee"'ish, will be neat seeing how it develops!
 
yes i am very excited to watch it grow up!

well at the pet store we sell ours for between $80 and $120, the breeder usually recommends a price for us, (but of course we have to up it a bunch to account for shipping, and all the equipment/substrate/feedings we go through while having the animal there). i actually didn't end up paying for mine, because my boss let me have it as a christmas bonus!! which i was obviously quite thrilled about!

the baby corns in the pet store are very well cared for (i should know, i am mostly the one that takes care of them!) usually if a pet from our store doesn't make it, we hear about it because we are such a small town, we are the only pet store that actually has animals in it (unless you count all the ich-ridden fish that walmart sells :(). a lot of people come back to us to ask for additional advice/to update us on how our animals are doing.

and to be quite honest, if we hear of any pets dying, it's usually no fault of ours. we've had people come in because their bird died, because they were caged right beside the front door, which is NOT a good thing in the winter, because if a bird or any animal catches a draft like that, they are very likely to be sick. also, a lot of people come in with dead siamese fighting fish. again, they don't listen to our advice on water changes and go ahead and do a complete water change and wash the gravel and tank with SOAP which is DEFINITELY going to kill your fish. you know. just stuff like that. sometimes you just CAN'T make people listen to your advice. but i am confident that we take good care of our animals, and we are constantly updated on how they're doing. we do our very best not to sell animals to "crazies," and we don't sell animals to children unless they have parental consent. we encourage a lot of people to do RESEARCH before they come in and buy a pet, we have a whole library of books on every type of animal we have in store, and quite often they will pick up a book before getting the pet (also we usually give them a discount ;))

i really enjoy working in a pet store actually. i can care for animals at home, AND at work! i could ask for nothing more!

WHEW didn't mean to turn this into a novel but, i really love my job. hooray!
 
oh and also, no, we don't sell them when they are that small. usually we get a lot of people coming in and inquiring about them, but we take their phone numbers down, and call them periodically and ask if they're still interested. but we keep them in the store for awhile to make sure they're going to be okay before we let them go to someone else.

I agree if the breeder told you creamsicle, creamsicle it is. I have know ill feelings about hybrids, I have two hybrids a creamsicle and a jungle. I know anything I breed my male creamsicle to will be a creamsicle, no matter what it looks like.
 
all this genetic recessive dominant this that makes my brain hurt! and at this point in time i have no desire to breed snakes. but who knows, i started with one budgie and worked my way up to six, so maybe before long i will have a huge collection of snakes! but right now i've still got a lot to learn about corns in general so breeding/genetics= no way

Of course you have a baby, since this has been hashed over many times on this forum. I think all we're trying to impress on you is go by what the breeder said as a creamsicle is a hybrid. Although I also agree it looks very RO. I dont' think a lot of people understand the gentics thing. I play on Mick's predictor, but I don't get it.
