My NEW Crested Gecko!!

Cute Crestie!! It's the cost of the food and living requirements that keeps me from getting one.
Can't wait to see him as he grows. Thanks for sharing

Thank you once again Danielle!! :0) You have been a great help through all of this so far with me and my gecko :0) (Everyone else has helped greatly too!!)

I went to Pangea and managed to get an 8oz bag for like 15.00 after shipping..which I guess is do-able..lol..Now when I get this food..do I put the bag in the fridge or put it in a cabinet? I know I have to do like 1 part powder 2 parts water..Also..Should I feed him this weird food the guy gave me until the new food gets here? (I have placed a pic of the food so everyone can see it..maybe you guys can tell me what this is and where he got it from..lol) Or should I maybe try replacing it with baby food until the new food gets here?

The guy seemed like he was kind of knowledgeable about cresties..I told him at first that I had a 10 gallon tank and he urged me to get a bigger one and one with more height to it then length..He knew they needed space to climb and even gave me some links to follow in case I need some info..but then I get the gecko and his color just seemed awkward to me, his eyes look like their bloodshot (though they come out nice and black and clear in the pics..weird) and the food is just...strange looking..at best..lol..

Also anyone know where I could get a 10 watt red light? I was going to go for 15 but if there is a 10 I'll go with 10 and just turn it on when I want to watch him and turn it off when I'm done.. :0)

Right now I have it in my fridge as I don't really know where else to put it..I'm not sure if it's a powder or not but I can certainly say it doesn't look like a powder and it's very hard..(almost like a hard clay type..) It's really weird to desribe...sorry..

Well I have finally come up with a name for the little guy..At first I was going to name him Reptar (yes from rugrats) but chose against that..so now his official name is Zilla :) (too small and cute for the "god" part..lol)

Also quick question..Would it be okay to buy one of those stick on hygrometers for zilla's tank? I got a thermometer with a probe that reaches halfway dow his tank so I get an idea of what he is feeling..but I know I still need a hygrometer..thank you for any and all opinions..

Well I know he has to eat tonight so I'm going to try and give him some of the food that the guy gave me..I hope its just a powder under that plastic but we'll see...The guy claims the gecko loves this food..as long as he has something to eat until the new food I ordered comes in.. :)

I would ditch that weird food when your order from pangea comes in but for now it can't hurt. You really don't need a hydrometer or thermometer in there unless your home easily is over 80 degrees I swear they are fine in the 70's and even high 60's. You can get away with buying the food in bulk which is so much cheaper due to the cost of shipping being the same from pangea either way so next time order at least a pound and yes store it in your fridge closed. You can premix the diet so all you have to do is squirt it in its bowl but only like a teaspoon they aren't voracious eaters for the most part. I pay $50 buck for 4 lbs. of food and it lasts me a year feeding 40-50 geckos at a time so really they are cheaper to keep then snakes easily. Their eyes always look bloodshot unless they are blue eyed its just the way they look but its cute and fun to photograph so nothing is wrong with his eyes. Zillas color will change during the day with temperature, humidity, and changes in activity its called firing up and down. When they are pale they are fired down and when dark and bright fired up though right before a shed they will look pastey looking no worries there either. My guess would be this food is clarks diet and though it isn't great it will do for now a few crickets are fine to feed too as long as they are no bigger than 90% of the size of his head and dusted with calcium and d3. If you ever have any questions feel free to ask me and a good forum for these guys is www.forums.repashy.com. No better info than from the guy that made this hobby what it is all the people there have a ton of experience and are more than happy to help newbies along. Good luck with zilla cute name!!

Wow thank you danielle :) I'll definitely sign up for the forum when I get the chance :)..I never knew the brightness of their color can change based on environment..that is really cool :)..the only reason I want to get a hygrometer is to make sure I don't make the tank too humid..and so I know when its too dry..I want to give zilla the most comfortable life he can have..besides, I still have to bring that mist'r back to petsmart so I'll just pick up a stick on hygrometer with the store credit and a small watt red light for part time viewing..thank you for all your help :)..by any chance..is there a way to tell how old he is? Thanks..

Cresteds just like snakes grow at different rates, but how big is he? You call him he, but do you know he is a he like does he have a noticeable hemipenal bulge (will look like testicles)? If his bulge is apparent I would say over 6 months. To gauge humidity take notice of the time your cage takes to air out between mistings. It is ideal for water droplets to remain for 3-5 hours, be dry 4-6 hours, and then remisted at night because they do need dry periods to aid proper shedding and avoid respiratory infections.

Well I misted the tank around 12:30 pm today..so I'll mist it again tonight around 11 when I get home :)..thanks!

As far as the sex..im not sure..and im unsure exactly how long he is..I will find all that out in a few days..after he settles in :)

Well here's a bit of an update..

I got home tonight and took out the mystery gecko food..since it was in an air tight bag I had to cut it open with a scissor...well...the minute I opened it and the air hit it..it..um....powder-fied....I know that's not a word..lol...but in instantly went from something gross looking to a very soft powder..(don't know how..lol) So I used the same ingredient I would for the food I ordered (1 part powder, 2 part water)..and sure it enough it became a pastey substance..so I set the small bowl back in the tank (after giving the tank it's night misting) and basiclly shut off the light so that the Zilla could have some time to explore in the darkness and hopefully eat a little bit :0)... But yea..all in all..so far this is going pretty good :0)
