My Newest Addition

What's This?
So I got lonely and missed my snakes back home and somehow found a guy selling Hogg Island boas for $75 in the area so I took the plunge and now have myself a little companion. It's a bit aggressive, but I'm assuming thats more because it's stressed and confused than its actual personality. It's about 2 months old. Here are a couple of pictures.

I have no doubt about it, my other bci was a bit nippy the first couple days as well but calmed down pretty quickly.

Any suggestions for names? I'm looking for something with a spanish flavor preferably.

Yay! Beautiful pinks on your new addition. Be sure to post pictures of his/her's different color phases.

That is such a pretty snake. I'm not a boa fan at all, but the colours on that are superb.

Unfortunately, that was the last one of the bunch. Thank you very much for the compliments. It doesnt seem to like to adventure too much, either that or its extremely comfortable in the one corner that its been in since last night...

I dont know if you keep boas, if you do dont take this as belittling, but boas when they are young are very nippy and need to be handled regardless of whether they bite or not. They will eventually calm down and be very nice pets, but without handling a 5-6 foot hog island would not be an animal I would want angry with me.

Don't worry, im quite familiar with the nippiness associated with boas. I have a central american that gave me my first snake bite. This one is defintiely more aggressive, but i know how to go about taming the beast.

Pretty baby. I really love the look of these guys. I just got mine last week, a total steal (less than you paid, if you can believe it!). He/she is however an absolute doll-even in blue. Congratulations.

Thankyou. I'm loving the color of these boas, they look nothing like the regular red tails. I have yet to check mine out in its night-time phase, I'm going to let it chill for a couple more days first, then feed it, then wait about a week to start the taming process... Of course knowing me, that plan will go out the window pretty quickly even if I try to resist and the snake is still nippy.

I still need a name for it though.

Is it male or female, or do you know?

I was thinking Frida (Kahlo) or Diego (Rivera) for Mexican names. Ocaso for sunset, inspired by the colours.

I haven't a clue what it's sex is, but we're just going on the assumption that its male (though I wouldnt mind a female at all). My girlfriend is quite adamant about naming it King Leonidus (leo for short) so I think I'm sticking with that. I'm probably going to steal one of the names for my other red-tail since I always always always have problems naming my snakes. I assume that the other one is female though. I havent had any of my snakes sexed. My opal, I bought knowing its sex, I'll possibly take the plunge and find out sometime in December when I'm back at home.

I told you that I'd be incapable of keeping my hands off of Leo! But I did a little bit of tank maintenance and I held him without a single problem. One thing I noticed is that he has A LOT of loose shed skin that I never noticed before so I'm guessing he must have been in blue recently. that would definitely explain why he's been pretty solitary and aggressive since I've gotten him. He hissed a little at first today, but didnt show that he was going to strike so I'm pretty sure that it was just that he was in shed. He's using his half log to go about shedding right now. If I can find my camera, I'll take a picture.

A quick update: I've had no problem with handling Leo at all for two days now. He doesnt seem to have an loose skin left so I'm assuming he just didnt shed completely with the breeder i got him from, something I shouldve asked about but that completely slipped my mind. Regardless, he lost a good amount in his shed and it was mostly whole. So I had him out last night and wanted to take a few pictures. I was a bit reluctant because everytime a camera has been around, he's been pretty nippy, but I took my chances and I'm glad I did because he was awesome with it, sstaying completely still as if posing.

So I got a couple of pictures of his other phase, you can compare them, I'm surprised in the difference..... of course there's also the possibility that it was just that I used a completely different camera to take this pictures.
