My poor little snake got stuck!

When I was checking on my little snake yesterday, I found that she was laying on top of the digital thermostat that had fallen down from the side of her viv. At first I just thought she must have felt it was a warm place to rest, but as I looked closer, I noticed she was stuck to the really sticky adhesive squares I had used to stick the thermometer to the glass wall. I was horrified! She was stuck in four differnt corners in the shape of a square. When I went to pull her out she was squirming all over and her skin was stretched so much I was scared she was going to tear herself open. :(

I didn't know how the heck I was going to get her loose. Then I remembered that some folks use oil to get rid of mites on snakes, so I grabbed some canola oil and degreased the remaining adhesive around the snake. I took a Q-tip and gently started rolling it along side the skin where it was attached. Slowly I was able to get her loose. She did leave behind some clear scales on each adhesive, but luckily her skin didn't actually tear. I was supposed to feed her, but decided I would give her a few days to de-stress. Ok, no more adhesive in the viv! I'm such a dunce!

I have those stick on temp gauges as well, and alot of times the temp gauge won't stick yet the sticky part stays on the viv. I just lay the temp gauge down on the substrate with out the sticky stuff at all. The best temp gauge I have is uses velcro sp? that holds the gauge. I take that out when I clean the cage and it seems to be my best temp gauge.

It was good thinking with the oil. I have in the past use a oil base (olive oil) to take things off that are sticky. It does seem to work in a pinch. :)

Glad to hear your snake is doing better I know that must have been quite a scare for you.

Gosh what a horror story, I am so glad it was OK but we have all learned an important lesson. I hope your both feeling better.....

I had the same happen to one of my snakes. unfortunately that happened at nightime and in the morning the snake was still stuck and a part of the skin was torn away. I couldn't get the tape of in parts (tried oil, water, soaking...). The next shed got rid of all the stuff and the scar has healed very good. NO MORE TAPE! that was exactly my reaction.
