My system

If order to cut back on my time in the snake room, I devised a system that splits all my snakes (currently around 100 or so) into 4 groups.

Each group gets checked (sheds, spot-cleaned & fresh water) every four days.

Smaller snakes get fed every four days; adult females every 8 days; and adult males every 16 days. This is really helpful in calculating how many and what size mice I need for a month. For example, if I have 50 adult males that are eating jumbo mice (decided by snake's weight), then I will need 100 jumbo mice for them .

Everyone gets new water bowls every 8 days (old ones put into dishwasher). Of course if they use their bowl for a toilet before then, they get a new bowl right away and that bowl isn't going into the dishwasher.

All cages get washed and disinfected (5% bleach) every 3 months . I also use newspaper so I can feed them in their cages. This saves a lot of time not having to place them in feeding containers like I would if I used aspen.

Note this only works (and has been for a couple of years) for cornsnakes, other ratsnakes, and gophersnakes . I have found that some of my other snakes, such as kingsnakes and especially garter snakes, have higher metabolisms (poop and eat more frequently). Most of these do better on the every four day feeding plan like my hatchling & yearling corns. My ball pythons (in my opinion, the most over-rated pet snake) however, do better on a plan similar to adult male corns.

Now instead of spending 4 hours or more each day in my snake room for daily maintenance, it's usually around 1-1.5 hours.

wow nice system. I only have a few snakes so not a problem for me. Can't believe how many snakes you got, im so jealous :(

Its not out of choice, hes addicted :grin01: Nah on a serious note though, if you have lots of different breeding projects on the go you will need lots of different morphs. You gotta remember theres over 100 morphs.

What a crazy question....
Yep, a totally crazy question :grin01:
I suppose someone with 1 snake that they want to keep as a pet couldn't see how the obsession bites, and the breeding possibilities of combining morphs leads to a rack or 2 full of snakes...............

Ha Ha Ha i think you described it to a tee!!

I have recently sold some of mine and now have less than 50...It feels weird so my eggs must hurry up and hatch so I have 100 )

Great system, I have one question. When I got my first corn I was told to feed them out of their tank otherwise they become defensive of their territoty and will tend to strike everytime you put your hand in. Do you have a problem with this? thanks susan

There are actually over 9 thousand possible combinations with the "base morphs" that already exsist.

Fresh water every 8 days? I give my collection fresh water at least every second day. After 3 days have you not noticed the "slime" and residue that builds up in the water bowl? I wouldn't drink it, so I don't expect my snakes to.

I think I'm pretty sick, but I enjoy cleaning time. Its a chance to have everyone out and check them all over. Im one of these keepers where poo doesn't have a chance to hit the ground before I'm over cleaning! LOL

Can we call you "Elle the poo catcher" :grin01:

Back to the topic at hand...That is a pretty good system you have laid out though I do agree with Elle about the water changing. I think a system really does help be more efficient when dealing with 20 or more snakes.

I currently spend about an hour or two a day taking care of my 45 animals. I remove all poo daily and change out water on any animal who needs it. I still choose to feed them all at the same time once per week, and that generally takes me about two hours. I can see the benefit of breaking it up as you do though. I also do not remove each animal into a feeding container. I feed in their enclosures with a pair of tongs for just about all of them. Some feed better in a container so I do put them in one, but I try to train them to eat comfortably in their enclosure so I don't have that added thing to do.

BY feeding off of tongs my snakes do not associate my hands with food and I have never had a problem. Some of my kingsnakes are very excitable eaters and are coming after the food even as I open their cage top so the 15 inch Tongs are my key to safety from mistake bites.

When the eggs hatch I will add another feeding day to give the hatchlings a second feeding each week, so I know my life will get much busier soon!

Do use aspen or newspaper?

Oh and I don't feed anything in containers either. I use newspaper for everything, regardless if its a burrowing species. I find its so much easier to hold humidity for what needs it, clean poo, replace substrate and feed on. Oh and its cheap as chips.

I enjoy keeping animals. Snakes happen to be my favorite. Personally, I can't figure out why people enjoy such things as hunting/fishing, golf, and getting drunk. Where I live, that's pretty much all there is to do.

Maybe, but I could think of worse things to be addicted to.

I don't think snakes are territorial creatures. However, by the time I get to feeding the snakes on the lower levels of my racks they have already picked up on the smell of the mice. If they need cleaned (fresh newspaper) I will temporallily transport them to a spare "holding" tub on the lower level of that rack. I have paint trim roller I use as a snake hook.

No, every 4 days they get fresh water (bowl dumped out and refilled). Every 8 days they get a clean bowl. So the water gets changed almost twice a week.

Some of my kingsnakes are very excitable eaters and are coming after the food even as I open their cage top so the 15 inch Tongs are my key to safety from mistake bites.
I know what you mean. My Brook's king is insane. He lunges at me and often tries eating his own tail. He does provide useful whenever I hatch out babies with kinked spines.

Cool. My point was, wouldnt you rather have 4 or 5 that you handled every day and spent time with, rather then 100 that you just look at for an hour a day?

Not everyone wants to handle their snakes. Some people prefer just to see them and admire their beauty from a distance, so to speak.

I only have a couple of snakes, but I don't have much desire to handle mine either. I do so every so often, but not every day - sometimes not even every week. We all do it differently I guess. :shrugs:

(Btw - I'm not saying snakepunk doesn't like handling his/her snakes or anything like that. I've no idea. I'm just throwing my 2 pennyworth in to the mix. :grin01: )

And now back to the OP...

That sounds like an efficient system. It must help to work out a routine - I've often wondered how people with a lot of snakes manage to feed, clean etc them all :shrugs:
