*Disclaimer*--This is a matter of opinion. Do not take these words as any form of "gospel" as regards cornsnake care. They aren't even that well informed.*
I would think that the act of sitting there,
ignoring the snake on a daily basis, has made him quite curious about you. Since your wife handles him all of the time, yet you sit right next to him, and make no effort to contact him, he is curious. Since you don't open the viv and attempt to handle him, he does not fear you in any way. Your wife, who opens the cage, and takes him out "to play", and handles him, and probably lifts his hides off of him...all of these things will cause the snake to be a little apprehensive of her, no matter how long she has had him. Since you don't do any of these things, he is not apprehensive of you. So he has no problem sticking his head out to look at you because you, as far as he can tell, don't even know he is there...because you ignore him.
He probably simply feels very secure because you make no sign of even noticing him, where your wife probably sticks her face close to the cage, ackowledging his presence, every time she sees him. You don't acknowledge him, so he feels secure, thinking that you don't even see him.
Given a choice, cornsnakes prefer to see, but not be seen. My guess is that he thinks you don't see him, due to your lack of acknowledgement, and so feels comfortable exposing himself to look at you. Afterall...you don't even know he is there, as far as he can tell...
Again...this is ALL conjecture and presumption. I don't know truthfully what thought processes are going on with your snake. But what I describe above makes sense, to me...if no one else
