HOLY COW…you guys and gals are terrible…though I laughed at the title myself, so I guess I’m terrible too.

On a serious note, what kind of moss are you using? I know a lot of people use sphagnum moss which I haven’t been able to locate locally. Roxanne went blue last week, and like I always do, I put a moist (yikes…did I actually say moist) hide in her enclosure. However, I am noticing mold growth in the hide box after 3 or 4 days. I am using green moss which on the package clearly states can be used in terrariums.

Steve

I use sphagnum moss. I get it wet in the sink and wring it out. I've tried paper towels, but the snakes didn't like it. You might find it in a garden center- I think they use it for orchids. Just make sure it hasn't been treated with anything.

Thanks Nanci!!!

Prior to using even the green moss, I steam it for 15 minutes using a vegetable steamer.

I'll check the garden centers this weekend.

Thanks again!!!

Steve

I use the Flukers moss myself and so far haven't had a problem with the dye doing any harm. I use it in my frog vivs and for my snakes' damp hides.

Nanci I really like your hide. I know its simple but when I was told to use a tupperware bowl & put paper towels in it, Well Dani did not go near it. I think it was the smell of the wet paper towels. Plus I never thought to turn the bowl upside down. Brilliant! I know that is one small detail but it makes a big deal when placing it in the viv.

Thanks again!

Do that, and if that fails, most reptile sites will sell a big ol' block of it for about $8, it's dried and so will last for ages. You just wet the small amount you grab out of the 'brick', but I think you already know that lol.

You guys are really funny!

Cool picture thread! Those moist hides really work well.

Ps...No matter what context it is in, 'moist' always sounds like a dirty word! LOL
