Natural Looking Humid Hide

Em Wright

The Ice Queen
Well, I've been working on a tank for one of my snakes and I want it to look natural! Only thing is that it's for a Boa and she's going to need a humid hide and I simply don't have anything that looks natural!

What I'm using now is a small sour cream container with a hole cut into it for her to get in and out. It looks horrendous with the other stuff. Flowers, hollowed out log hide, "rock" water dish, and even a foam mushroom shelf! So what's some things I can do to decorate the container or even something else I can look into that's fairly cheap that looks more natural than a sour cream cup?

What i you covered it with that yellow foam stuff that hardens up, and stuck flowers or leaves in it before it dried??

Or covered it with shelf liner?

Yellow Foam Stuff? Shelf Liner? I'm not sure what this is.

I had thought of attaching flowers to it or painting it, but I was afraid it might be harmful. I was actually just looking into clay.

EDIT: That the glue or paint might be harmful, not the flowers. I have acrylic paints. Would it be okay to use those?

Nevermind, it's apparently toxic...

What's the stuff people use for building backgrounds in terrariums?

I was thinking of Great Stuff. DAPtex is supposed to be less toxic- here's the MSDS. Weird, Great Stuff is so commonly used...

I would just go to Hobby Lobby and get some self drying clay and shape it like I want. Then you could put flowers in it or paint it with non-toxic paint. You may want the Sour Cream lid to be the bottom so water does not effect it.

Just my 2 cents

Nanci - they use Great Stuff. Like a lot of things people use in construction it may be toxic when used but after it dries it may be harmless or very close to harmless. Like PVC glue but when it dries it is alot less toxic.

Thanks Nanci and Fatman!

I think I will hit up Hobby Lobby next time I'm in the city and see if I can get some clay that is self drying to make my own. For now I'm going to "suffer" with the sour cream container. The snake isn't going to care one way or another really. :p

I got this one at our local pet store for 10 bucks :)

Do you know the brand name and what it's called exactly? I can have my local pet store order me one probably. That's exactly what I was looking for!
