Hello everyone, it's been a while since I've posted or talked about my little snake, Oro, but I am in dire need of advice and ideas.

I am leaving to move to Maryland with my Grandmother this Friday to help get me out of a somewhat bad situtation. My little corn snake lives with me at present in Pennsylvania. Now, I have just gotten back from taking a nice long christmas vacation from the 17th of December, to just last night. I was visiting friends in Florida and my mother in Colorado.

When I got back to check in on my baby I was in shock. Not only was my room a disaster zone thanks to no one cleaning up after the 8 dogs, but the snake tank was a disaster. There was poop everywhere and poop caked on his tank decorations. He had no water and his heat lamp was sitting broken on the radiator next to his tank. Even worse, he had never tried to bite or hiss or rattle his tail at me before but when I put my hand in the tank he was really scared and freaked out. It took me a couple of minutes of keeping my hand absolutely still before he felt comfortable enough to crawl into my hand and let me pick him up. As soon as he was in my arms I immediately began trying not to cry at how poor conditions he was living in. I put him in his feeding container (teasing I know) temporarily so I could clean his tank out, clean the decorations and give him water. BOY was he a thirsty little guy, he drank nearly half of the dish!

Now here's my main problem. Living with my grandmother means no pets allowed and she's also very scared of snakes and anti animal/pet owning. (She just doesn't like being restricted to taking care of something, which I respect of her.) The people I'm staying with are the people who helped me get money for him for Christmas a couple years ago, and I know they've been feeding him, but he's not their top priority. So even though they've stated that I can leave him with them at least until May while I look for a place of my own, I think you'd understand while I'm none too happy or comfortable with the idea. Making matters worse right now my relationship with some of the people in the house went from being their adopted child into the family, to non existent. >:

My mother has a friend who used to breed snakes and has a pet boa of her own. She'd be more then willing to help my mother take care of Oro until I was on my feet. My friends in Florida say they could store him away for me safely if I could find a way to get him there. So I somewhat have options? But still, none I know how to achieve. I've never really considered the idea of snakes on a plane, more then a movie.

My mother's friend suggested in the worst case scenario, to put him into hibernation by doubling his feeding once, then placing him in a pillowcase and into a backpack with some spare clothes for warmth, then hiding him like that for about 4 weeks, in the hopes I could find an apartment and job as quickly as possible. While it is a great last stitch idea, I'd be worried my grandmother would try to put said clothes in backpack, in the washing machine on accident.

I love Oro like my child, and I lost one corn already, I don't think I could really bare losing another one. So please, if anyone has ideas or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate the advice. Heck, even well wishes and luck work too. Sorry this is so long, I just wanted to make sure I was properly explaining everything.

I"m sorry to hear about the condition you found Oro in upon your return and of your need to find a temporary new home for him. The hibernation idea is a bad one. Not only are you risking problems with your grandmother, but whoever told you how to set a snake up for brumation (hibernation) needs a refresher course. A sbake needs to be fasted for at least 2 weeks before dropping their temperature. Feeding them a very large meal and then immediately cooling them will only lead to the meal sitting undigested in their system causing a big problem.

You mentioned that Oro's heat lamp was broken, I hope you have a UTH to heat his tank in addition to the heat lamp as I know it gets pretty cold up there.

Do you have any friends up there that might be willing to keep Oro temporarily? Ones that have a clue how to care for a pet? You can also ask the membership here is there is anyone close that might take him for you.

Good luck!

I do indeed have a UTH, that was one of my first major concerns. Since the lamp broke I also moved him slightly closer to the radiator in my room so he's getting the extra heat.

I wish I had friends here who could take him, but that's another reason I'm moving. Don't really know anyone in the area.

I'll be moving to Chevy Chase/Bethesda area in Maryland.

I don't know, thats a hard situation. Maybe someone here will be willing to house him, there are still good people in the world, so don't give up! Sending you some good energy

*takes the energy eagerly* Thank you so much. <3 I know this forum is filled with wonderful people, and I'm hoping I can run into a spot of good luck through all this. =w=

I'm talking to the friend who's supposed to move up from Florida, to Maryland with me, and she's recommended I take some pictures of Oro for people, that maybe his cuteness will rub off on people. So not just for the cuteness, but so people can see those pretty scales I'm in love with, I'm going to unpack my camera and open up Photobucket.

I live in Rockville only miles from Bethesda and am always willing to temporarily house animals. Are you sure you can't talk to grams about the snake? Afterall you would be taking care of it financially and personally so I don't get the issue. I know some people are just unnaturally terrified, but maybe if she understood how much you love this little guy he would warm up to the idea.

Darlin', there are probably a hundred people here who'd be willing to take Oro in temporarily. We could always do like they do on the sugar glider forums and railroad him from point A to point B. It's stressful, but it's less stressful than swimming in poo. :(

I'm sending hundreds of hugs your way. If ever you get desperate, my basement has room for one more.

Adam. :wavey:

Thank you so much for more hugs. :3 Anyways, I tried talking to my grandmother. Technically she's an olden day persian woman and she considers snakes evil and the like. She says just the sight scares her. I tried explaining he's not very big at all (Only a year and a half old) and that he doesn't have venomous fangs, or that he's able to escape from the tank and terrorize her. He tries but I have the secure snaps on the back of the tank lid and if I must, a lock slot.

Rockville isn't too far off thankfully! My next step then is finding a way to get him to you, and what you'd like me to bring. Either his tank, his little feeding container, whatever really. Would it be possible I could visit with him from time to time as well? And I could offer up feed money as you'd need it if you want.

Decided to post that picture now that I found my camera. When I get a better opportunity to take more, I'll make a photogallery post.

If things with Danielle don't work out, let me know and we can always get him set up in my classroom (I am in SE Baltimore) until you find a place. I've got no room at the inn here at home though!

Classrooms work too! Now my next big hurdle is working out a plan on how to get him safely to anyone without my Grandmother flipping her lid about a snake in her car. She's already probably not too happy about my bringing ALL the video games I own in the car. >w>;

In this case, I might seriously suggest you just pack him as if for shipping in a snake bag, in a box with some heat packs. Tell her you need to "drop some things off for storage with a friend" and get her to run you over there. Don't ask, don't tell-- the snake isn't going to fly out of the box and strike her down. Just make sure he is well packed, and be low key about it.

Okay that could work. As long as I know everything before noon tomorrow (where he's going, where to meet them, etc). Is there a tutorial or something that can explain how to properly pack a snake so I can make sure I have him safe?

Here is a good link to pack as if you were shipping:
http://arbreptiles.com/shipping/index.shtml

However, you don't have to pack quite as well if it is just for a short trip. The main advice I will give is to be VERY CAREFUL if you use heat packs. It is really easy to over do it and cook your snake. Much better to have a corn too cool than too hot. Always err on the side of too cool. And make sure travel is on an empty stomach (for the snake, not you, lol!)

Good luck!

Ah thank you so much! And normally he eats on a thursday or friday (typically a fuzzy and a hopper, live) so he's got an empty belly right now. :3
