Need some quick 'Rack System' Help

Joejr14

Grand Bubble Burster
Okay, I took the plunge as I was running out of space in my apartment and with the help of a friend built a rack.

Nothing special, 40"x40", it'll end up holding 18 12qt sterilites, and I've spent about $70 so far.

I used 1/2" plywood for the walls (ie top, bottom, back, and sides) and I plan on using it for the shelves too. I also used 2x2's to frame the back of the 'box' into place and for added stability.

My question now comes to my shelves. They're 40 inches long, and 18 deep, and I'm stuck on how to keep them in place. Screws from the sides wont work as it'll split the wood, and I'm not overly fond of nails. I'm also worried about it sagging in the middle. There is room for a pair of 2x2 in between the first and third sterilite for a vertical support 'post', but I'm not sure if that's the best way to go about doing it. Any help would be greatly appreciate as I've got 5 more little guys coming tomorrow and I want to have this done by tomorrow night.

drill pilot holes, but ply isn't the best material to be fastening into end grain...it'll work though

sag is unavoidable unless you support the shelves somehow

O! I can answer this one! :) Just completed a rack and screwed up try #1. If you look at my thread titled "Reptile Room" I posted pictures. What we did to stabalize the shelves was useing a piece of wood on each side screwed in and liquid nailed it into place. Gives the shelves an extra bit of stability.

They make little "L" shaped supporters that are can be used to hold them up. If you drill pilot holes, you should have no problem with the wood splitting. That's how my shelves are held in place and have been just fine ever since.

Thanks for the help. In the end I just screwed some 2x2 to the plywood shelves, and into the back frame, and that worked out okay so far.

Not bad for a few hours and $70 or so. I'll try to post some pics later tonight.
