New 20 Gallon Long Tank Setup?

My corn snake is in a 10 gallon tank right now, but I just bought a 20 gallon long tank for cheap for when he's a little bigger.

I am using the zoo med under tank heater (size 10-20 gallon) and I'm wondering if a 10-20 gallon size one is good enough for a 20 gallon LONG tank? Or do I need to get a 30-40 gallon sized one?

If a 10-20 gallon size one is good enough, then can someone tell me if its possible to take a zoo med tank heater off and put it onto another tank? I used the adhesive on the tank heater, which is on my 10 gallon. If someone knows a possible way to remove it and stick it again, please tell me the procedure (as it will save me another $20 :grin01:.)

Also, have anyone used this thermostat? http://www.zoomed.com/db/products/E...6IlByb2R1Y3RDYXRlZ29yeSI7czo3OiJIZWF0aW5nIjt9
I have one on the way and I'm wondering if it'll be at an accurate 85 degrees once I get it dialed in with a thermometer.

I think the 10-20 gallon heater would be okay for a 20 long, a 30-40 would be kinda big IMO...

Oh, and if you're thinking of peeling the UTH off and trying to re-use it, I would advise against it. I did that with my last UTH and it ended up shorting out on me a few weeks later...smoke and sparks and whatnot... It's up to you, it may or may not work out, but I wouldn't risk it

That thermostat works okay. Because of its nature as an on/off type, you get some fluctuation, maybe five degrees over what you set. Just be aware of that.

I have the 30-40 size on my 20long, so that it would cover 1/3 of my tank.
I have taken off the mats..super slow.. and have used them on other tanks. If you lose alot of the stickiness then use some duct tape and tape it on along the edges. I would also monitor it though to make sure there was no damage when moving it.

Thanks for quick responses. Is it possible to put the probe from the thermostat on the OUTSIDE of the tank and electrical tape it under the heat mat? I will also put a digital thermometer on the INSIDE of the tank opposite side of the thermostat probe. I will then adjust the thermostat until the thermometer reaches the desired temps. Is this a good setup or will it not work? I don't want wires running in and out of the cage, which is why I want to do this.

Im not 100% sure but i think that if u put it under the UTH then it would get two hot of a reading . So then it could cut off at a diff temp and it could be cold in the tank because the temp from straight on the uth may be diff then through the glass.

Just my opinion.

The temp probe and the therm probe should be side by side for the best accurate reading. I have them both under the substrate, above the uth, (then my warm side hide is on top of that) Yes, this does leave wires running out of the tank but I think it is the best way to accurately monitor and control your uth

I never stick my UTH's to the tanks. Just prop them up with little rubber legs on each corner and then slide the mat under. No sense in wasting something perfectly reusable by sticking it right on the glass I say.

well i have the zilla thermometer/hydrometeor with 2 probes. I place the thermometer prove just above the aspen thats because my snakes dont burry themselves they only used the hides, and the hygrometer its at the mid form top to bottom.

I have the 10-20 gallon one on my 20 gallon long tank. It works just fine, it seemed a bit small at first, but I just put a hide (made from a cereal box :) ) over it and it is perfect, the hide stays at temp I set on the thermostat. Also, I pulled this one off of another viv (used a paint scraper) and I definitly agree with Saffleur, if you buy a new one of these, dont stick it to your viv. There really isnt any point, in the future I will just probably tape my heater to the viv. easier to take off
