New Baby Not sure what to do.

This is my first snake and I have only had him for about a week I think he is about a month old. I fed him for the first time on Sat but haven't handled him much. I am not really sure how to go about handling him as he seems really afraid of me and I don't want him to not like me. Do I just reach in and pick him up or let him come to me?

Hi! I'm new too but I can tell you what I've learned so far... I had mine for about 5 days and I had to pick him up to install a thermostat I got so I put my hand in and he kinda checked it out but was a bit skittish, so I let him slither around for a bit, then on his own he went over my hand so I just kinda scooped him up in the middle then put my other hand up to support the rest. He is quite wiggly but calmed down quickly. Today I had to take him out for a feed and just quick gently grab in the middle and lift but be careful to support the rest or they may panic. I think short but frequent handlings are best for a youngin to get used to you, that's how I think but someone with more experience may correct me here!

Also try not to be too skittish yourself, I think jerky movements will make them nervous too. Don't worry about getting bitten, I got a little nip on thermostat day and it was like a prickly tickle! Hope I helped :)

The editor in me says THANK YOU for being one of the few people ever to spell that word correctly!

I posted some taming hints in a thread called Handling Bin For A Hatchling (or Hateling?).

I thought the same, Nanci! I did a double take.

OP, I have a few babies that clearly don't want to be held but they get picked up anyway! They settle down after half a minute of being picked up. I remember feeling the way you describe!

I'm curious then, how else have you seen it spelled? Spelling errors drive me nuts and I hate only being able to post from my phone right now because sometimes I don't notice errors until it's too late!

I can't spell worth crud and I know that one.

To the OP, enjoy the new baby :) They are normally a bit more jumpy and mellow out as they age.

I introduced my snakes to my friends on Sunday, and they were much more skittish with them than they are with me and my son... My friend was holding my year old Pewter and he was going crazy... Once I took the snake back, he chilled out almost immediately, it was pretty cool! It was like he knew he was back with mom!! :)

Thanks! I am getting used to just reaching in and picking him up though I have to remind myself to go slow. I was struck at the other day because I started coming at him too fast. Though now that it has happened once I don't have to be afraid of it happening again because it didn't hurt at like all. I can't wait for him to mellow out some and not move so fast. I am a little afraid to hold him anywhere but over the cage because I am afraid he will get away from me and then get lost.
